Jerry.... I've been lurking until I had something I thought I could contribute.... As far as hood options, here's a link to the Marmon Meteor that shows a hood where the side panel is broken at the top level of the pipes, with the bottom panel being cut out around them. There are a couple of good photos there in the link. Might be an option....

Are they brass with guards around the lenses? They came from an ship salvaging company in India.

I thought about something similar--fasten the lower hood sides to the "catwalk" semi permanently and have the upper part hinged. The cut outs can go either on the upper or the lower. The hood holddowns need some pondering though. Also I wonder how much heat will come off the pipes. Will I need paint and wood protection? Maybe, I'll know after my Sunday drive.

Lurking for months and 52 pages of humor, information, tricks and hints and I am in awe .This has been one of my favortie threads to keep up with and a world of knowledge. Some I may some day use and many I wont but will keep them in the archives of my brain. Thanks for all your efforts and pictures and I now will go back to my Lurking stance.

  6. ya i dig it
so tailites shown will be used?

hood? have the lower flare in and up a little the upper flare out and down so from a step away the seam is not seen allowing room for air but
having a center post that is a hood side attachment point or three alike front ,center ,rear... hood pins ?
or a long cam that has the claws and a lever so ya flip the lever up open the hood... lever down the hood is locked

a brass engine turned cover over the wood cat walk spaced so air circulates or the wood removed in tha area replaced with a brass copper ,alum. coragated tin."heat guard"

wish i lived closer what fun
    go man go.....

    Muffler hangers

Easter Parade, Easter Egg Hunt, Girl Scout Dinner... I only got to work about two hours, just enough time to get a good beginning on the second hanger. Tomorrow, finish the hanger, install, then drive to Oscar's shop.

    Big drive

Well, I made the big drive and the video is real cool. Unfortunately, the computer I use to up load videos is down with a nasty virus that won't even let you get into safe mode. And my computer doesn't have a firewire port. The repair man (my big son) is supposed to come over and fix it but his girlfriend is at his house and would you believe, she's more important than my video. Hang in there speedster fans.

    Big Drive

I live in a small town, finding a firewire card can be difficult. I went to the local computer repair and witnessed a miracle--he had one for $20. I took it home and installed it and the computer wouldn't boot. Took it out and went back to town to a less well known computer repair he had a used one--$5. Took it home installed it and damn if it didn't work. I spent the last hour editing and uploading. I even discovered a titlemaker. WOW! Okay, you'll have to forgive Oscar's camera work. I think he was scared sh*tless. It's a miracle he didn't drop the camera. I'm going to try and insert this into the post but if I can't do it you'll have to click here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kvp3nhUOWuo Enjoy. ps. The insert wouldn't work. Someone explain it to me again. <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">

I can't wait to put it in third. Then the transmission will quiet down and I can open er up!

    Jerry,

been lurking here. As a former driver engineer for the fire department I have driven several antique rigs. I noticed a little grind between gears. (you probably know this) Try double-clutching it when shifting. My old department has a 1913 Seagraves (1 of 2 left in the world) A 1926 Aarons-Fox and a 1958 American LaFrance.
Can't wait to see it go in 3rd gear!

  17. Jerry,

Great to see the Special out and about! Hey, is that a Dodge behind Oscar in the still of your video?

Good Ears! I'm surprised you could hear grind through all the clatter. Well, I could start a big debate here, but double clutching only works on the down shift. :) Besides, the clutch is so heavy, I'm not sure it's possible to double clutch. Probably the first motion shaft brake on the Seagrave is not quite adjusted right. Also, in my excitement I shifted a little too quickly. You've got to give the gears time to slow.

Okay, I'll come clean. I had an ulterior motive for moving the Seagrave. Remember that Geo Metro I bought? High gas prices were killing me and I needed an economy car. Well, last week I came across a 2005 Chevy Aveo (read Daewoo) with a head full of bent valves for $1500. This is modern car with all the amenities, I thought, much better than a Geo Metro. So I bought it. Now that the head is off I'm not that impressed. Plastic timing belt idlers! The Geo Metro is probably a better engineered car. So while I'm waiting for the valves and head gasket I'm going to do a little experimenting on fender construction. Pictures tomorrow.

  23. You would not be impressed with the Metro's engineering either.....I wasn't. A lawnmower engine is built WAY better.

  24. Can you move the top rings?

I'd have to pull the pistons. I think it'll be fine.

    Fenders

Hey, how about these fenders? This is real cut and paste--with scissors and glue.

  26. Looks good Jerry! Personally, I like flat-top fenders (front and rear) with your boattail, but those look nice too.

Diggin' that old style cut & paste. I think it looks better than the flat fenders, my 2 cents.

I agree with Jerseyboy. The fenders tie together the body and the chassis, and seem to change the proportions of the the massive chassis and the smaller body. It is amazing how it makes everything look in proportion. I think you have a winner!
