Do you know of an RV junk yard in your next of the woods?

These are also available in 12 volt electrically operated versions.

Just build a nice looking old tool box to encase them.

    Might get in trouble here.

The folding step idea is a great one but I don't think it's for the Speedster--mostly because once you're sitting in the car you'd have to activate a switch to close it electrically. That might be a bit advanced for 1923. Also I couldn't use the tool box. And also it would require a lot of time to develop into a workable period looking device. So, dear speedster aficionados, for that reason, I'm sticking with the tried and true. It's gonna look good. I promise. Today I straightened, then modified the original running board brackets to fit on the outside of the frame and not the backside. Then I bead blasted and painted them. I hope to start on the tool box frame tomorrow.

Hey, my son graduated to blue belt. A dad has to brag occasionally.

Jerry, I am sure I speak for all of us when I say there is no doubt about that.

    Toolbox/step

I cut out a plywood step just to make sure things would fit. After that I traced it on a 2X10. I need to make a jig to hold all the piece while I weld them. I need both boxes to be the same. I only had time to cut 2 piece of round tubing. My plan is to place a piece of tubing at each corner then bend the sheet metal around the whole thing. 22 gauge metal can be a little hard to bend in a tight radius so I may be doomed. It's only 10 inches high so that will help.

Check out the billboard with us and the REO and Santa. If you're at the MARTA Station at Lenox Square in Atlanta you can scope it out.

    Step/toolbox

I only got to work about an hour today. I found some interesting metal piece my buddy Gene gave me and turned out to be perfect to make the step/toolbox framework out of.
The trip for me is getting everything square. This coming week with Christmas and the kids are out of school I may not get much done.

  11. I hope that's not an apology. I'm pretty sure you'll get more done in one hour than I would in eight.

  12. Jerry, the ad looks great! Are they going to let you have it when they're done?

    Step/tool box

Got about an hour of work in today and finished up the framework for the step. It'll take about 70 inches of metal to wrap around the frame. I wanted that rounded look but that makes it a little harder to bend. You've got to imagine the wood top in aluminum with the words Seagrave Special etched in it. Left my camera home so I had to use my cell phone.

The wife sent me to the grocery store for 2 items. Four phone calls later I had six bags of groceries. But I did stop by the shop to see how the toollbox/step fit. You'll have to use some imagination. Merry Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Holiday/Solstice to everyone.

Babyland had us go down to Atlanta for a photo shoot. I haven't seen the official photos but here are some shots my wife took.

    step/toolbox

I didn't have a tool to bend metal with a .75 radius so I welded up a tee out of pipe and stuck it in the drill press. An angle in the vise completed my tool. Now I needed a piece of sheet metal 11.5 x 69 to make the cover but unfortunately I only had a somewhat shorter piece. Since I wasn't sure my little bending device would work I thought I'd do a practice piece. Remarkably, the practice piece came out so good I decided to just fill in the missing piece since it was on the back side and wouldn't show anyway. Next time I need to bend over the lip and weld everything up. Left my camera at home again.

    Mush

Xmas and staying at home with children is turning my brain to mush. I got away today and even remembered my camera but when I tried to take a picture the batteries were dead. Bah. Worked on the sheet metal some more. Two weeks to make a box! This is bad. And one more to go! I'm doing all this because I can't paint the frame covers until I know where everything on them is going. BTW we all went to see Tintin. If you like European cars from the 50's you'll enjoy seeing all of them faithful reproduced in that film. The rest of the movie okay too.

    Got batteries

This is yesterdays post. I bent over the metal on the top then made up a floor for the box then installed it. Unfortunately in my haste to complete the project I used a a regular clamp to hold things together and it left some beautiful dimples. Hey, that's what body is for. I've got lots of time. So I wiped on some bondo and went home.

Make it up as you go

As I've said I make it up as I go. Sometimes that doesn't work out too well. Case in point. I made the step /toolbox for the left side. Today I had a thought--what about the muffler? I quickly installed the muffler and checked for interference. Guess what? The exhaust pipe goes right through the middle of the box. Nice! So now I had to convert the left box into the right box--or make a new one, which wasn't happening. I was able through extraordinary butchering to get the bottom out and install it in the top. Viola! A right side box. All butchery will be hidden by some nifty windlace strategically placed over the welds. Needs that anyway. I really wasn't looking forward to making two boxes any way. On the left side I'll make brackets to hold the step and use a piece of this nice perforated metal a friend gave me to make an exhaust guard.

    2. Windlace

    3. Bondo

Hmmm...I thought there was something else to write down. Oh, now I remember.

    4. Plan Ahead (Maybe that should go to the top of the list?)

At least you remembered to bring your new camera. :D

An old mechanic once told me, "You have to be half butcher to be a good mechanic."
Not sure if that's good, but sometimes it works.
