    Jerry,

I think I agree with "Piston Farmer" on the sides. They could be very simple & have some aircraft like access doors with Dzus fasteners over the oil filler etc. so you do not need to fight the massive hood open for routine actions. The doors could add to the mystery of the engine. They would also break up the large flat area on the drivers hood side & legitimize the unavoidable ripples here & there.

I think no sides would look correct if you go with no fenders but this car looks of a much higher class than a fall fair dirt track racer.

If you do go sideless, at least drill the bottom edge of the hood for a hinge & bolt a reinforcement bar on so you will not have to repaint the hood if you change your mind later.

i vote for leaving the sides off, everyone will want to see that engine.

  13. I'll cast my vote for a hood with louvers large enough to see the goodies inside.

  14. Jerry,

You've done an amazing job- don't stop now! Hood sides will set the car off beautifully, especially with what you've talked about doing, and will fit the period of car you're building!!!

    Jerry,

I think some side would look good, but hiding the engine too much, would be worse than not covering enough of it. Either way I still like the straps and wool.

Are me meeting at the shop April 1?

    Exhaust

I had my mind all made up. Now I have to think again. You know how I hate to think. So here are some different exhaust/hood treatments to contemplate. I think I'll cut out a hood side and play see how it looks. Tomorrow if I can find the time. The county told me I have to install a backflow preventer on the water line at the NAPA building. Someone tell me how germs can travel up a 70ft pipe against an 80lb/sqin pressure.

New idea: the Seagrave Special & whole polished area on the passenger side of the motor looks like a winged logo of sorts. It's a nice shape. So can you repeat that, a bit larger, on the vertical hood tops, both sides? I attached a cropped pic of the polished area which may not be any good since I'm on the iPhone.

Mechanically & chrome-wise, I like the first pic best, the beige car,
for hood side treatment. But I don't hate any of the others. And motor visibility is good too, with strong mesh to keep the rocks of the bad roads of the era out of the motor compartment.

Edit: yeah pic sucks. Was supposed to be 3 times as wide, showing whole shiny area. Use imagination, look at earlier pics above.

have that flared panel be polished aluminum only bigger attached to the flat sides with rivets or carriage bolts that panel has embossed seagrave spec in or out
leave intake side open like i drewed

that should be simple enuf to start with a flat sheet slight brake
and a few curves on th ends .. a little blood ...

leave enuf pipes exposed to attach griillin food baskets

    Hood sides

I had time today to cut out a right side hood side. I kinda like the way it looks but it needs a hole. Might have time tomorrow to cut out the left side. Dead battery on the camera again. Put new ones in this evening.

Jerry, just FYI last Sunday on Topgear UK there was a very good feature on 2 giant speedsters : German Messerschmitt (the 'Brutus') powered vs. British Merlin powered.
    You might be interested.

It's readily available via certain methods over the internet (but of course i'm not condoning the use of these technologies to view such videos).

I've see those two speedsters on youtube. Nice! I'll check out the show. Thanks.

    Left hood side

I cut out the side on my 1910 pneumatic metal shear then put my pattern over it and marked out the holes. I'm going to cut out the holes, then shear the side in two and see if it fits. Then I'll play around with the design.

Sorry guys, I've been working at the Napa Building trying to get a garage door moved, a wall built and a office upgraded. I'm taking the day off tomorrow and hope to have a few progress pictures.
