Fabulous! I haven't been to Chickasha in many years. Looks like it's gotten better.

    UPDATE!

Project Paint the Speedster is on track! The Aveo chassis has been pulled back into position. The headlights and radiator haven't show up yet but today I start reassembly.

Very close actually, but this is the particular car that I was referring to:

This car was restored in the 60's....I believe I have the restoration article on this car somewhere....

If you're still looking for a camera with manual focus, try a second-hand Canon Rebel XT - ours has a switch labelled AF/MF (autofocus/manual focus). I've hit it by accident and spent some time trying to figure out why it wasn't focussing!

    Sold!

Kind of. My buddy, Keith, saw the Aveo and insisted he needed it for his daughter whose car is about to die. I told him if he finished putting it back together I'd give him a deal. I, meanwhile, proceeded to strip out the speedster in prep for paint. This means doing all the little things I skipped which is mostly making sure all the holes line up with the frame. There's going to be lots of "patina" on this car. No way I can get the bodywork perfect. (Like those cars Mr.Model T has posted--Nice work, Mr. Model T! :) Of course, I will be able to CRUSH them any time I like. Picture a monster truck rolling over a Renault LeCar ) So, I'll have to go for over all effect and massive sensory overload.

Jerry , followed your build from the start. I thought you might like this photo from the AACA site.

I like it. I couldn't get the pic to expand. I was going over with the painter whether to put on my "tail piece" after or before the paint job. I thought before, then we could apply and buff the paint right to the edge of the tail piece. He said after and put the tail piece over top of the paint. I was afraid of scratches etc. Opnions?

Put on tail piece, adjust fit, buff and finish tail piece. Then remove it carefully for paint, and reapply it after paint.

It's almost impossible to get a good sharp line otherwise. Paint will wick up underneath metal and the edge of the metal piece will be a touch uneven due to various paint thicknesses.

    Where's Jerry?

Update. I've got the frame covers, the cowl and the hood stripped off and I've been going over them trying to get them ready to go to the paint shop. This doesn't mean doing any more body work, just cleaning up metal work and making sure bolt holes line up. The hinges on the hood are giving me some problems. Several of the barrels are tight against the sheet metal and are going to scrape off the paint when the hood opens or closes. I should have seen this before I riveted everything together but I'm not that sharp. I could chalk it up to patina and let it ride, or I could spend another two weeks trying to rework the offending hinge barrels. Mmmm. One way or another the parts are going to the paint shop on Monday.

Put in a piece of long wood dowel rod between two hood parts, down near where it rubs. Open hinge, use dowel as lever fulcrum / spacer, to ever-so-gently bend the metal back a little, you may need a touch of rubber hammer action. Do it subtly and evenly and it will look fine.

    Happy, Happy, Happy

Everybody in my house has been watching Duck Dynasty. Life here in Cleveland Ga is a lot like it is on that show except no one I know has that kind of money.

Well, I finally figured out how to get the 5 foot pins out of the hood. Thread one end and use a slide hammer. It'll make your hand sore hammering out a 5 foot pin 1/4 inch at a time. I filed and cleaned up around all the hinge barrels so I think there won't be any paint scraped off. I decided I need to make a cradle to hold the hood for the painter or else the hinges won't get painted right because the under side is going to be black. Tomorrow's project. Other than that, I think the first round of bodywork is ready to go to the paint shop. Keith has almost got the Aveo back together. I don't get paid until it's finished.

Yesterday, while Alex and I were driving home, he spotted an 18" round snapping turtle on the side of the road. The photo doesn't really show how big he was. Alex had heard turtle tasted like squirrel so he wanted to take the snapper home and cook him up. I said it'd be better if we let the snapper be.

Jerry what I have done in the past on long hood hinges is grind a slight taper on the leading edge, wd40 the rod then attach a variable speed drill on the back end run the drill at a slow speed & push the rod in it will work in just keep wd 40ing it as you feed it in & make sure as it feeds in you keep the next hinge segment in line. Pounding can bend or kink the rod if you hit it wrong. It works for me.

    from so cal

I used to work as the mechanic in an aircraft paint shop. Believe me when I say a very small amount of WD-40 can cause major headaches in a paint job.

I had to squirt a little oil between the barrels to get the pin out but I cleaned everything up before I put it together. I'll oil the hinge up after the paint is on. Paint don't like oil. Keep silicone on the next block over.

    Hood Cradle

I'm probably going overboard but I just don't see how the paint shop is going to paint the hood without a cradle to put it on. Building this thing isn't easy either. I had to scrape up the wood first. I didn't want to buy any so I went down to Chow Trailers and stole some from their old pallets. Then I traced out the cowl and the radiator. This sounds easier than it was. After cutting it on the bandsaw and screwing it together I soon had something to look at. As a friend of mine says--"All I lack is finishing." This means adding two braces in my case. After that it's off to the paint shop.

  28. Even your supporting projects are cool. Are you going to do one last mockup/full assembly before blowing it apart for paint?

    Cradle, Buffing and Aveo

I finished up the cradle and muscled on the hood. Some wheels would be nice but I couldn't find any laying around the shop. Still trying to get everything ready for painting I peeled the protective skin off the stainless tail piece. It was like a mirror! I'm trying to match the radiator so I decided to take off the shine with a little buffing. I also took the rough edge off where I cut the piece out. Next I checked outside where Keith was working on the Aveo. By golly, he had the blasted car finished! When do I get paid, Keith? The paint man wants his money!
