Hey Jerry, did you suppress your auto-shop-visiting urges all week? Any progress?

    Nerve

I summoned enough nerve to visit the body shop today. As you know I had a fiasco with the primer falling off (probably my fault) and this has effectively doubled the cost of my paint job. Where to find the extra money is now the problem. I'm thinking of selling ownership shares in the speedster with me retaining a controlling interest. Each owner will receive an authentic ownership certificate personally signed by me and would be eligible for a once a year ten minute ride (weather permitting.) Mmmm! This sounds quite lucrative. Anyway, they're going to paint the frame covers tomorrow. Back at my shop I stripped all the paint off the doors (which took 5 minutes with a razor blade) and reapplied the bondo. Saturday Alex and I went by the airport to see the annual gathering of Bucker airplanes.

I didn't have the luxury of a Cool Whip container....like some, so my ziplock bag sealed contribution is winging its way to you duct-taped on a south bound economy carrier pidgin flight as I type this. You should see it in the next few months provided the lay-overs in Dallas and Atlanta go well....and he doesn't get lost. They said his cataracts and sense of direction issues were getting worse ;)

I cleaned out my couch cushions, and clipped the money to Fred The Beagle's collar; Then I told him to take it to Jerry in Cleveland. Please give him a biscuit when he gets there.

Is that a Jungmann behind you?

    from so cal

Taped a quarter to the back of a snail this morning and pointed him east. Should be there sometime this century. Keep the faith Jerry, it's always the last 10% of the work that takes 90% of the time.

I'm hoping all monies will converge on me just as the paint dries and the bill is slid across the counter. I stopped by the body shop this morning and didn't see any red paint. These things can't be rushed. Yes, that was a Jungmann. After leaving the airport we went to see a friend's collection of old Americana. I was so impressed with his stuff I mentioned that the picker guys from TV should stop by. He said they'd already been there but he wouldn't sell them anything. Said they were too low on their prices. Someone has to put Hollywood in their place. Thanks for the tour, Lowell. It was great!

    RED!

I'm seeing red. :) On the frame covers anyway. Looks nice! Meanwhile, I've been working on the chassis getting it ready for the sheet metal. I had to put in the driveshaft and tighten some bolts and run some wires--stuff that will be difficult after the body it on. I also want to wash down the chassis since there is shop dust all over it.

    RED!

That bodywork looks good, probably better than anything on the Zborowski specials.

Oh, you can still go underslung.

    More RED!

I pulled the speedster into the sun today and gave it a bath then it was off to Allen's Paint and Body. After a careful installation I was back at the shop. On the trip over and back I got plenty of stares. The hub caps seem to attract the most curiosity. I kept our little secret. I'll have to find a large cloth cover to keep the dust off the speedster during assembly. It was a gratifying day.

But then subtle was never your intention, was it?

And where'd you get the little, tiny rollback?

Like all my vehicles--I pulled it out of a junk yard. The engine was half out and disassembled. The other day it started shifting hard (manual.) I discovered the transmission was falling out. The E-brake stopped working a month ago. I use a wooden chock. No time to fix! The speedster must be finished!!

  21. I've followed this build right from the start, and i have now finally mustered the courage to say what i've been thinking the whole time; WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!

(I'm from Sweden. Here, insult is the most sincere form of admiration)

Congratulations for building the most awesome form of transportation i have ever had the pleasure of witnessing! If ever my wallet can avoid the long fingers of her indoors i have promised myself to go to Cleveland, GA on my pilgrimage.

YOU MUST BE CRAZY TO ADMIRE ME! From now on I am assuming the Swedish model and will express all my approval with insult. :) Thanks Daniel.

    Prime Time

I've got to get the body into shape myself to keep the cost down. That's means prime and block sand. I had to move the speedster outside to shift things around in my overcrowded shop. To keep the new paintwork clean I draped it with some old muslin I had laying around. While the primer was hardening I worked on the hood wood. Tomorrow I sand and pay a visit to the body shop.
