Guys, I'm in the planning stages for my '46 Chevy truck and trying to get some more ideas. You guys were great in suggesting a general plan, but now I need to start looking for parts! I like the original dash, but I don't have the gauges for it. As I see it, I have two ways to go... 1. find/fabricate an insert to fill in the instrument hole. I could use aftermarket (and there are alot of nice trad-looking units out there), but I would really like to use something truely traditional. 2. chop a donor dash/instruments to fit my cab. Thinking maybe a 61/62 Impala and widening teh "shelter" to fit, splicing a 59/60 Impala instrument pod/dash to my dash skeleton, sectioning a 60-64 Corvair dash and using its gauges, or (off the wall) 56 Olds, Chrystler Imperial instruments in a fabbed dash........ I'm open for any suggestions and/or pics of other '39-'46 Chevy truck dashes. Whadyathink?
Check out the 60-62 Chrysler and Imperial dash's, might be able to find a complete unit and the gauge cluster is insane looking. Also, check a 1963 Mercury full size dash, they look pretty cool as well. Both are different from what you would normally see and would set the interior off. Just my opinions anyway.
Just an after-thought. I know some might not like the idea, but take a look at a mid-60's Plymouth Fury dash. Might take some work, but the square gauge cluster looks kind of cool. Would definately be different and would have everyone asking about it.
Maybe an early bronco gauge cluster? This is a pricey reconditioned one from Tom's Bronco Parts, but might be able to find something cheaper on craigslist or ebay. The mid 60's ford trucks have the idiot light version of the same thing https://www.tomsbroncoparts.com/product.php?id=322
