It's been a long time since I've sprayed this crap, and it wasn't a spectacular job then. I'm using polyurethane this time around, no fragile yellowing lacquer in this millenium for me. Any tips on tip size, techniques, basecoats would be glady accepted. I've got a 5hp compressor and a Binks suction feed cup. Thanks a lot friends.
Never sprayed any myself....but this looks like a pretty good article... http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/howto/135_0308_flake/index.html
hey thats meeeeee........nads if ya got anyquestions after the article email me and i wil do my best to help you..........
You're FINALLY gonna paint the old girl??? That might cause a fatal disruption in the balance of the universe. The Rodncustom article really helped me when I flaked the Chrysler. I used one of the cheapy guns from Harbor Freight (do they have them in FLA???) and threw it out after. paint gun I'm not sure what the tip size is, but it's just big enough. The flakes didn't come out at first and then suddenly they came out like a mutha! Flake is pretty nasty and those little f**kers get EVERYWHERE!! If you do it at home your gonna find little purple flakes on your trampoline, vespa, kids..... You going to SF buddy?? Have fun, =NOAH=
First of let me tell you it makes one hell of a mess. If you can talk somebody ito letting you use their garage instead of yours go for it. Just make sure you don't want them as a friend anymore. I used a cheap gravity feed primer gun. It worked great but you have to keep the gun moving or the flake will settle. Between coats empty the gun. I mixed my flake into a clear basecoat(PPG DBU500 it's called color blender)It was cheaper this way than actually mixing it into real (expensive) clear. I then cleared it and sanded it. Then I shot the candy color some flames and a clearcoat. Clark
What happens if you use differnt colors for the base and flake? Like say a red base and silver flake? Will you just not be able to see the base (if the flake is heavy enough)?
it looks the best when its over the same color... you can spray red over silver but when the sun was off of it,~ it would look like it was dirty... silver over silver and so on... sharpe makes a killer 2.2 tip, cheap cobalt gun that sprays flake VERY NICE, its a gravity feed hvlp tuck
Great job Donnie and SoWhat. Damn Donnie I LOVE your website, I've saved it. I'm inspired now fellas. Yeah Noah I dig about getting flakes everywhere, that shit was in my teenage nutsack, in my ears, in my mom's freezer....everywhere. That was back in 1978. I'm raring to go. Thank you all so much.
PS Noah, sorry pal I can't make it to SF, gotta get my projects done. And yeah we do have a Harbor Freight in town.
thanks nads glad ya like the site man i gotta get more pics put up. if ya need any help with the difference going from lacquer to urethane let me know . it is a little trickier with urethanes.....cool man keep me updated ......
What Donnie said... I wish I had a positive metalflake story to share with you... maybe next month I can help...
donnies the MAN when it comes to flake! ive been using the silver flake ,just lay it down over your base in the clear, then a few more coats of straight clear, let dry, sand then do the kandy and clear it,or you can cheat and just spray the base, then mix some flake into your kandy, shoot it, then spray some straight kandy over it to burie it,then clear it. ...like others said, the flake goes EVERYWHERE,,,i think i still have it in places i havent washed yet good luck Nads!
