Not as far north as I was thinking, but about as far east, Osoyoos. A little over 200 miles NE of me. Try @trollst he is in Princeton, a bit closer. Even he is 70+ miles, anyone in Hedley or Oliver?

BC is pretty big, about 1/3 bigger than Texas. A little perspective, you can see Osoyoos here, I am just outside Vancouver, and we are 200+ miles apart. Its a big place. And about 90% of the population is in Vancouver and Victoria, the rest of it is pretty thinly populated.

A little over 200 miles as the crow flies. Driving it takes what, 3-4 1/2 hours?

SOLID 3 1/2 anyway, if you leave early and avoid the traffic between here and Chilliwack.

The reco for 50 weight in an oil bath air filter comes from an early fifties Chrysler manual. Would be interested to know what other manufacturers recommend.

I do know one person that had bad oil burning problems from using 10W30 in an oil bath filter but that was in an old Power Wagon used off road. It is possible you would get away with thin oil if you drove on smooth roads and didn't go too fast.

Actually he is correct British Columbia has (364,764 sq mi) while Texas covers a total area of 268,581 square miles
Texas is 801 miles from the tip of the panhandle to the Rio Grande below Brownsville and from El Paso to Orange is 762 miles but when you cut out all of the corners and angles around the edge you loose a lot of square miles. 558 crow flying miles from the Washington state border to the Alaska border.

Then back to the original question at hand . No the oil bath filter won't cause any fumes in the car. A lot of guys don't like them because it takes several minutes to clean them properly and refill them with oil and go again while they can pop the top off an air filter with a paper element, pull the old one out, put the new one in and go again in short order.
I had a 55 Buick Special the same color combo but reversed and have to go along with engine blowby probably being the main cause of the fumes you are getting in the car. That either takes work on the engine or at least changing to a positive crankcase ventilation system from the road draft tube.
Making sure that the exhaust is in good shape and making sure the trunk seal is good are also things that need to be done along with checking to make sure there are no leaks though the floorboards.

Put the car up on ramps or jack stands. With the engine COLD and running, run your hand over the exhaust manifolds and where the exhaust pipe connects. Do the same over the exhaust pipe, muffler and tail pipe. You will feel the leak with your hand - the pulsations and heat.

Get a factory SERVICE MANUAL from Ed Faxon (Riverside, CA) if the car didn't come with one. BEST money you will ever spend!

How about a pic of you and the car? We all love and support girls who own and drive old stuff, and LOVE those who go under the hood! Great looking Buick and camp trailer!!!

    Good Luck, Tim

great looking buick. one great feature is the "anti-theft device"--the starter. very few people know how to start one of those! as for the air cleaner, people pay big bucks for those oil-bath jobs, but in the '60s, that was the first thing that hit the trash can!

I don't think it's "necessary" to replace a draft tube system, they would get sludged up in those days due to infrequent oil changes and non-detergent oil, short trips, etc. Clean everything up and drive it, it will work just fine.

Not to mention the absence of a vast number of flying and crawling insects and other creatures most of which I had never seen until I married a Texan and started going there on a semi regular basis :D

Yep, still here, first and last one, a little weak, but still able to log on, still able to stare at my shop, life is good. It was cl***ed as a serious heart attack, could have killed me, but there was a heart team visiting the local hospital as I walked in, saved my life. They are normally never there, this being a small town and all, got shipped off to the big town, got looked after, now have my own heart doctor, life is good, looking at the right side of the gr***.

REALLY glad to hear this! Take care bud! I eat stuff I probably shouldn't, but I also eat lots of oatmeal, Pomelo, g****fruit and stuff like that, take a baby aspirin every day, and get lots of exercise, blood pressure and cholesterol are pretty good so far, knock on wood.

Sharlene---Nice looking car, it looks like your trailer is a 12ft. 1980's BOLER -----NEAT little trailer. I vote for replacing the oil bath filter to a standard type paper filter. However, as it was pointed out, there are restorers out there who would LOVE to have your old one. As to your FUMES issues, we need a better description of FUMES. Exhaust, blow by, oil vent tube, poor running engine etc. all create an odor/fumes situation. You'll need to describe that a little better and also when the fumes are worse (idling, excelerating, coasting, etc. Bill

The actual reason people stopped using them was, in racing applications, they don't work well in high speed turns. The manufacturers probably quit using them because they cost more to build.

Check for oil drips onto the exhaust. If after you’ve checked everything everyone has said above, I have one more area to look:

On Fords up thru at least the late 50’s, there is a felt washer inside the steering column tube where it meets the steering box. This washer fits tight against the steering shaft and inside of the tube. It keeps fumes from the oil in the box from going up the tube and into the cabin. If this washer is bad, you can get a fume smell. Find an exploded view of your Buick column and see if they used a seal down there. If they did, you may need to replace it.

Man, if I had you guys working for me in the '60s thru 80s you could have talked customers out of badly needed overhauls.
"Get rid of the oil bath air cleaner! Just blow out the draft tube!" -Any fool could tell ya that Buick has blowby... (where's the guy that says valve seals {umbrella type} will solve ALL engine smoking/oil consumption? )o_O
Check the venting on the steering column?
    There's a memory from distant past...
