O.K. I need another project like I need a hole in my head but here gos. Just picked up this 61 rambler american super 2 door wagon for a song and a dance. So Ive always been a wagon guy and I love ground scraping cars (Everything I own is to low). But Im thinking a gasser for this project. So give me your opinion low or gasser. Cool wagon! Instead of the two choices, how about a sleeper. On the outside stock grocery getter and at the strip a heart throbbing drag wagon.

    I'd make it a pickup. A Ramblerino.

I'm down with the sleeper look. Bone stock appearance on the outside, down to the dog dish hubcaps, and a big honkin' motor just under the surface.

Look at the window tops, they make the car look like it is bent in the middle. Pickup conversion would cure that. Bob

  9. Another vote for sleeper. Lower it ever so slightly, and stuff a fire-breathing engine under the hood.

Yep a truck would be kool but I,m a wagon nut. I was leaning toward the gasser just on the fabrication stand point, it would be easier. The way the front end is put together a guy would have to cut the shock towers out to get a v8 in it.

  12. If it was easy, everyone would do it!

Don't get me wrong, I love wagons, and a gasser wagon would be a blast. I'm just not feeling it on this particular wagon. But, then again, I'm not building it...you are. Take lots of pictures and GET BUSY!

  13. Or a Ramblero... LOL. But I'll still cast my vote for sleeper...

A big block rat motor would help get this sleeper to the Mall and the grocery store. Closed chamber heads with oval ports should be adequate....

How about a sleeper / surf wagon? It would be kinda like a dog that's so ugly it's cute. Yeah, that's the ticket.

No gasser, sleeper. Fill the wheelwells with steelies and tires and run a poverty cap. I like the red.
what kind of shape is the body in? Looks like it got a quickie respray somewhere along the line, the rear quarter feature line looks questionable. make sure the bottom foot isn't packed full of filler before you get too far into it.

Just in case you've not taken a tape measure to it, that engine compartment is very small. Putting anything other than the original I6, a hot I4, or a GM 60° V6 is likely to take major surgery.

If it were mine, I'd sheet metal over the rear side windows and change it to a sedan delivery...then go for the old shop truck look. Altitude wise I'd stay stock or slightly lowered

I like the sleeper concept, would be tempting to collect tickets, might keep a 'low' profile

While cutting the Rambler up certainly would be different (my custom 56 was originally a wagon), I think this car is cool and needs to stay a wagon. The sleeper idea would make it a practical ride with some unexpected hidden muscle. It will turn heads, get some attention and probably be a desirable sell if you ever decide to part with it.
    Good luck on your decision.

Keep it low, maybe a turbo V6 .......small but potent........throw some good suspension under it and drive the wheels off of it............

Given your two choices I'd love to see that as a gasser. I love off brand stuff and it being a wagon makes it that much cooler. Plus cutting the front off the car will make it easier to get a big motor in it.

    Perfect candidate for a gasser.

  28. Slam it, Put a small V8 in it and really upgrade the suspension.
