Back in the 1970's I'd go to the airport or docks to pick up cars & parts we always used a "Broker" A guy with a staff of people that did all the paperwork. I never filled in anything, just handed off an envelope and had a car or crate of parts. Maybe that is what you need to make things easier.

I’ll be honest with you this doesn’t sound good to me. I’ve shipped parts and goods all over the world and I never had to give anything like that to mail something. BUT it wasn’t a complete motor like your doing.

Yeah 10K is a nice chunk to have but it’s not worth your lifetime of hard work. Personally I’d bough out, refund the money and only ship in the states. Way too many red flags and the last thing you need is to have your bank account and information stolen and have to deal with the headaches that come along with something like this.

    Yep. Funny story…
Back in the day when we set up a factory in Utica, NY we did a lot or border crossings. Had staff at work and a broker to handle the paperwork. Was crossing the border in Detroit (coming from Canada) with the BIL of the company owner. We had some stuff for a trade show in the car. We get “pulled over” at customs. BIL is driving. Customs guy (looked like a drill sergeant), asks BIL (almost screaming) where’s your “manifesto”. I start to laugh under my breath. BIL replies “ Rose (one of our buyers) said we didn’t need one”. I almost pissed myself laughing. Now customs guy is really pissed. Tells us to “park over there”. Well, two hrs later, after calling the office and broker, we finally had the correct customs papers.

I absolutely refuse to cross at the tunnel into Detroit. Half a dozen
of the border guards pulled their guns on me last time. :(
The bridge is slightly better, but I go out of my way to avoid it.
    Into Canada, no problem.

Haha! First time crossing into Ogdensburg , NY to pick up parts at a freight forwarder, I was crossing back into Canada, but was still in the USA. Thought I had to stop at US Customs. Park, walk to bldg, can’t find an open door. Keep walking towards the front where cars are crossing from Canada into the USA. Border agent jumps out from booth screams at me to “freeze” as he is going for his gun. I’m thinking WTF!? Tell him I just want to get inside to speak with someone. Lol! Once inside, we all had a good laugh.

Sounds like it might be a little late to bow out. He said he already gave them his SSN.

The TIN is your SSN for US citizens and foreign financial institutions will often ask for that. But you should always be 100% certain who you are sending it to has a legitimate need for that information.

Also just a tip for everyone. Whenever you send your SSN on the web do not include dashes or spaces if possible. Just send it as a continuous string like 123456789, not 123 45 6789. That will fool most hacker tools that are looking for SSNs.

  10. I have imported cars and parts from the U.S, they were dropped off at the shipping agent's site, with my details and address, and have never heard anything back from the sellers as far as problems with SS numbers, etc. Most of these were private sellers, and I have spoken to them after the import, and besides having to supply titles for complete cars, nothing else was required on the U.S. end. This info may be needed at the money transfer part, but not in shipping.

Just a WAG , our federal govt is asking for ID of seller to make sure that he pays taxes on the sale, that's ultimately important to them .

I haven't shipped internationally in years..but this thread reminded me about an incident like this. I forgot if it was a car or a motor or what...going international, and they asked me for my SS number. I asked why. In my foggy memory it seems there is a distinction if you are contracting with someone and shipping it yourself, or your motor being added to a shipment already going to that country...like a freight consolidator would do. If you are "shipping" it...they need information for customs, if a freight consolidator does it..it gets shipped under their info. I think that's right...it was about 15 years ago. Might also depend on the destination country too. Some are pickier than others.

  14. Nope, likely refuse entry if they find bugs, or if the wood doesn’t meet requirements. Sometimes they let you off with fumigation and destruction of the dunnage. Not my exact expertise, and it is the requirement of the importing country. So phytosanitary requirements for Sweden was it?

I suppose that this means a transaction of $10,000.
So the demand for a SSN probably has nothing to do with the engine, it is because any transaction of that amount or more requires a form to be filled out and be remitted to the Feds.

Been I while since I’ve flown internationally but if I remember correctly the stewards used to talk about if a person had 10k or more they had to declare it, not sure of the details, never had that much cash with me.
