Anybody have a safe method for loosening the adhesive that holds the glass in the bottom channel of the roll up mechanism on the doors of my '31 Chevy? And..then what is best for reinstalling the new glass?? Thanks, Twobit ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Depends on what kind of adhesive it is. If it's windshield sealant (black) use a heat gun sparingly on the metal channel, didn't let it get too hot or you'll screw up the glass. After thoroughly heated, I put a wood block against the channel and resting on the side of the glass, then hit the block lightly with a hammer to get the channel to come off. I used a Autoglass product called "Release Agent" that comes in a spray can; you spray it on the adhesive and wait to it loosens up. Check your local Autoglass shop to see if they can sell you any. I never tried this, but I wonder if a strong paint remover could do the job? for one, it never harm the glass or the metal channel. Of course, doing anything mentioned above, the glass with channel must be removed from the mechanism and out of the door (work on with glass lying table).
I think I used lacquer thinner or acetone. But WD-40 might work also. Let it soak and gently lift the glass out of the channel by prying gently under the glass at one end of the channel to get it started. Put electrical tape over the screwdriver blade to avoid chipping glass.. For reinstalling use glass setting tape - no glue. Get it at www.restoration specialties.com PS: I think beebing's idea is better.
