    Hey Guys,

I am Glassier (Glass Industry worker) that was wondering what the demand and need for custom cut glass is in our society. I have been cutting glass for years and have always wondered. I can get several different kinds of glass (tinted, blue cast, green cast, and standard clear) and if there is a need for it I am available for you guys. Just let me know yer past experiances are and average pricing and I can beat it. I'm not lookin to make big buck, just help out fellow friends.

    Thanks,
    Kyle

I could use a good glass guy in town, who actually uses 1/4" flat laminated glass instead of that metric crap, and knows how to finish the edges.....but it would be nice if he were in town here.

would love to have someone in california that didnt charge up the ass for cut glass. even tried to get some lexon, said it would cost just as much as cutting the windshield. screw that. if you were closer, i would love it. but for people closer to you, its an awesome gesture and i thank you.

I've been doin it for 35 years, retired union guy. I sure ain't rich, but have cut more glass for rods, customs and antiques than I can remember. If yer near a large city you might do allrite. Do you have patterns? I have an old roller machine with patterns from 1928-1954, it really helps as so many guys have no patterns. I just do it for a few local guys anymore, not as fun as it use to be! Good luck....OLDBEET

Welll thanks for all the reponses. Keep em comin guys! Let me clarify though. I don't have any templates or access to a roller so all I am able to do is flat glass, so bassically the early rods only. All i would need from you guys is a posterboard template of yer window mailed to me and then I could cut and ship the glass back to ya. I use true 1/4 inch laminate safety glass so you will get exactly what ya need. Thanks again!

  11. Dutch, I've been doiing old car glass since 1965, I have over 15,000 original patterns. and I have kept busy enough that I seldom sweep floors. good to see someone interested in keeping the old cars rolling. very few glass shop in this area that will even cut glass anymore.

I would think that your area would have plenty of professional glass shops to meet the demand. Is there a real need for this service? Cutting flat glass appears to me, to be not too complicated, i.e., most every glass shop does it. I would think specialization in cutting curved windshields might be a good niche field.

I spoke with a gentleman a few month's ago, who specialized in cutting curved windshields. He quoted me $1,500.00 and guaranteed an un-cracked glass. My point is, how many flat door glasses would you need to cut to equal the labor for the windshield cut. Would seem to me that cutting windshields would be more lucrative than simply doing what every glass shop does on a daily basis.

Not trying to rain on your parade, but just being "devils advocate" for a minute. Good luck whatever you decide. Stu

  14. that's one of the problems i can see.....i'm glad you are offering your services , but it may be only benifical to guys local to you. shipping glass around the county is a big pain

the other thing is patterns... you need to get the NAGS patterns and book for the most popular cars at least...model A's , and `32-`40 fords to start. i use two places for glass , one or the other usually has the pattern..if i say i need two of #3612 and one of #2360 you should be able to cut them

    just my opinion

Well guys thanks for yer input on the glass. I am actually only planning on cutting glas for chopped flat glass coupes and others like flat rear window of trucks n stuff. To tell you the truth in my area there is a real need for that kind of thing. Coming short of driving to the Chicago suburbs and 2 hours in traffic the isn't any place near for custom glass cutting. As for those of you that think it is easy to cut safety glass and do it the right way, I only assume you've never done it your self. Just ask Old Beet and he'll tell ya. But never the less I will be available to do it, even if it only once a decade. i just wanna help out where I can.

    Thanks again,
    Kyle
