I was not telling him to use a generator, just using it as an example that 30 amp charging was sufficient to run everything he had mentioned. But that was before he told us about the electric fan for the radiator. With an electric fan I would use a voltage sensing setup with at least a 50 amp alternator.
Well all the ******** spe******ts threw their two cents in but I agree with the guys that say the "40 amp" alternator will do fine with what it sounds like you are running/planning on running. If you don't have a bunch of high draw accessories you don't need high output from the alternator. As a couple of guys said stock output for an alternator in a lot of early to mid 60's cars was between 37 and 45 amps. I think my 71 GMC 3/4 ton came with a 37 amp alternator stock on it. I still have that one out in the shed but never took the regulator out of the truck. It ran the truck with my uncle's cb radio in it just fine for a lot of years and did fine for me for a few years. If you are going to run high wattage halogens or a big **** kicking sound system you need more amps out of the alternator. As far as the 1 wire thing, they were originally made for conversions on farm equipment that had mag style ignition and didn't have the setup to trigger the exciter wire without a bunch of work. Bolt them on, run one wire to the junction box for what electrical system there was and done. Hot rodders picked up on them from there. As for the gotta run a generator or you ain't traditional comments. That may be somewhat true but I have seen one hell of a lot more "help I am broke down on my way to___________ (quite often Lonestar) and my generator ****ped out what do I do now? the Autozone here in the little berg I am stopped in doesn't have one. Generators are cool until they **** out on a road trip and you can't get a replacement by walking into the first parts house you come to.
no fighting allowed or bad moods, ok?... but I just never will agree to that basic mindset, no matter if a generator or whatever part in question, gets that Autozone speech.. for one simple reason..politely as possible...>>>then where do we draw a line if we think that AZ excuse? Why run a aging Flathead, s**** that too, Then the trans,,,the rear.. the brakes, hell just get a new f'n car.. One that REALLY pisses me off on HAMB?? Some say they run a common later SBC so if they break down in the desert needing a water pump...they'd never run a Nailhead or a Cad or Hemi or Olds as AZone won't have it!! Wow! Ban their ***es! LOL This thread kinda did get to a non hamb friendly build...now we run a electric fan, so we need a alternator... hell, lets s**** the flatty, add a lame looking LS and AC.. See? I drove the **** out of my early Olds powered 32 ,late today..no spare, no tools, no cell, no nothing.. or just stay hiding under the bed! What could be so bad to have a problem? Nothing! Hey, some chick might stop to help!! ...with her cute sisters... ..or their hot mom.. The front Mech fuel pump on my 32 started leaking through the new diaphragm from winter blend gas, or was it summer blend?..last year. So I just byp***ed it and ran off the 12v "priming pump" that many old carbed car owners use to fill dry carbs.. like I did...but out at dusk, two towns away a month+ ago..IT TOO, starts knocking and stops pumping.. Hey I broke down near an ex Bro in Law...the only "ex"-anything I would even care talk to, LOL... left it there overnight, came back in the AM with a 1.5 gallon gravity tank taped..lol...on top of the hood rods...looked silly but still got thumbs up on the way home...Why trailer it with my truck and trailer??? that is a pain, and more time/effort to do...See? no F;n hood either, so it was a simple task! The more "no" a car has, the less things to go bad. Simple..
AN ELECTRIC FAN ! ! ? ! The traditional boys are probably in a backroom somewhere plotting your demise. LOL
I appreciate overkill so my Deuce roadster runs a 140 amp alternator with one wire. I not only err on the side of safety, but also on the side of reliability. That ride has taken us across the country three times so far with no problems.
"We drive by night." That way, the trad police won't find us since they can't run their headlights and A-M radio at the same time. LOL
My wife asks me all the time "what the hell is so funny on that forum that you are laughing all the time at 5am in the morning"! You guys are certainly entertaining, luv the HAMB......
Gary, you seem to hate traditional mindsets "to me". I have no clue why a person thinks they need 140 AMPS? on a car? Wanting to be able to do roadside welding on bulldozers if needed? or what?...but I am not going to try to sway you to a generator.! The main point that gets missed by the trad haters..is that 20+ years ago, Ryan apparently wanted a website that "preaches the gospel" of the OLD ways. So you guys come to the traditional site and spew your STREET ROD gospel and the worst part by FAR???, you guys simply HATE US. Don't F;n deny it! Just that term Trad Police!!! tells that you street rodders simply hate us, hate the gospel.. Why the H are you here? Going to a cat show with your dog and dissing the cat owners.. WTF? It is the underlying hatred of US, that has made so many people leave. You guys don't get it... or us!....the trad guys...we like the whine of old straighter cut gears in our top shift stick trans, we like the feel of an "axle car on bias", we want to feel the road..to hear the distinct exhaust sound of a flatty or a thick walled Olds....you guys will never get it......never..so instead, you bash us, and our cars... that is just plain sad, on the only traditional site on the web that I can find... .Lighten the F up! This is a F'n hobby, a "bucket list dream" to some others here, to build and DRIVE an old looking rod! Geebus...let it go! ..get the car out on the road and watch the smiles received.. you feel good and THEY feel good...and as they are p***ing by?...no one sees, or cares, if it "has this or that, for parts"..trad or streetrod...it is the CAR on the freakin' ROAD!......that is what they spotted, as you come into view coming towards them.. .
Just jerking your chain. GM was using an alternator with an external regulator by '64. I have one now that I plan on using that came from a stationary motor. In truth the only part of the car that this particular alternator is going on, that anyone is ever going to see, says Dietz anyway. So how would they know? I suppose that the use of any particular type of electrical supply depends on the build. On an AV8 for example, if it is true to the build, a genny would be the supply of choice. On the other hand on a '60s build I would think that an alternator would be acceptable. Of course that is just my jaded opinion. LOL send me your addy. I got some boat tanks you could have one of them. Then you can throw it in the floor and pump it up and fly. Its a funny thing, some parts that you can't find in Gotham City you can actually find in Podunk Center, USA. Lots of farm implements still use gennys.
What's wrong with the Hamb lately is, a guy asks a simple question about one nontraditional part for a Hamb friendly car, so he can get it on the road. Then it turns into a **** storm shortly after his question is answered. This is not necessary, and it drives a lot of people away who could contribute here but don't like all the BS. There I said it. Brian
I totally agree ... ancient **** is still ****. Hot rodding is about more power/better performance and the best way to do that is to replace a flathead as well as its trans and rear with something newer/more reliable/more powerful. F&J, I could not have said it better myself
My fault! I was googling on here looking for ways to hook up the one wire alternator, with a Flathead…and then I read all the silly posts!!! And I was laughing because my car doesn’t fit in any category!!! -stock, body 33 -49 to 53 Flathead -39 Toploader, three speed with a 48 F1 Open Dr. -Converted to a mustang 8 inch with a buggy spring! And stock wishbone split with “Modern” Heim joints! Fake Buick drums, upfront with reproduction, Lincoln backing plate! -Flat Head has a one wire chrome GM alternator because I can’t fit a generator because…I have an…uh-Oh! A 4 barrel carburetor ! Oh, and God forbid, I have an electronic distributor! Also, an electric fan cause I can’t really fit manual fan on there. Without some crazy machining or something But then… it has an original “Traditional” mor-drop dropped axle, original 48 Ford spindles and 40 Ford hubs! So it’s not a street rod…it’s not traditional, so…I guess it’s just a hot rod. Within the definition of hot rod could be anything that’s “Hot” Who knows??? All of this to say, you know what… Its mine that’s all I care!!!! I think we need to have a new category like “ Trog”only traditional, or something of that nature??? I totally dig traditional early all old parts kind of hot rods. I also like some… street rods.. it all depends on what they’ve done to it of course. I’ve put my car in the traditional section because it’s more traditional then not?? so far nobody’s ever said anything about it.
