I need help identifying the 10 bolt rear end in my car. I'm getting confusing information in my research, especially when it comes to MOST have this type of cover, or lugs on the casting, etc. I also haven't been able to find a source of codes stamped on the axle tube ( C RX 0617G (maybe a faint"1" at the end?). The case is what most sources say is "usually" an 8.2, while the cover is "usually" an 8.5. It has the deeper style leaf spring perches, 9 1/2" x 2" drum brakes. Any clarification or help appreciated! Thanks in advance.....Joe 100_0143.JPG 100_0144.JPG 100_0142.JPG

I think it's an 8.5. I'd pull the cover and look at the numbers stamped on the ring gear, to verify. If original GM gears, they should have a month and date stamped on them, which will probably verify that it's from the 1970s, the 8.5 was used starting 1971, iirc.

Not an 8.5" axle. It's an 8.2" axle. The difference is an 8.2" differential has a housing that's shaped round, just like the cover. But an 8.5" axle housing has two squared ears at around 5 and 7 o'clock at the bottom of the casting that are easily seen and large.
Take a look here for some great references, and pictures, plus descriptions:
