My single wire ALT is ****ping out on me and I am looking to replace it with a three wire. I have a 54 Cadillac coupe deville. The current alternator is a king chrome 110 amp. POS by the way ^_^

Any suggestions on what the replacement should be?

Look up new one for an 85 chevy half ton truck, they had 65 and 80 amp alternators.

Should be the same mountings as your POS.

Run the trigger wire (white wire or #1 on the alt) to the resistor side of the starter with a diode.

Awesome. Which leads to my next question? Is that all there is to a three wire setup? No other steps?

86 Firebird has a 95 amp alternator, but you will have to change the pulley. It is a Delco 12SI. The switched wire needs to run through a warning light bulb or a resistor for proper function. [IMG]

No need for a light or resistor. Hook the trigger wire to to the resistor side of the starter with a diode, done deal. Been doing it without any issues for a long time.

Thats all there is to it.

BTW the 65 amp chevy truck alternator is less than 50 bucks with paying for the core.

This would be because my generator was on its last limb two years ago and I felt the alternator would provide a more reliable and constant charge.

I think I will need more than 65 amps for my setup though. I have a stereo system and an aux fan.
