i said 25 yrs ago when toyota and datson (nissian) started opening more and more dealerships that and american cars started to look like the imports that things where going to change big time down the line.back in 77 i had a a.c delco rep tell me that gm would fase out all rearwheel drive cars and v8s would be a thing of the past. at the time i just thougt he had drank to much of that shine i gave him. (he was a yankee). just a few yrs latter he was right. it had started. the big 3 will be gone and we will be driving japan owned cars for daily drivers.amc, plymouth, olds. whats next? i own a small hot rod and custom bike shop and most of our custumers have rice burnners. i hate them.

Geez, man... It's not going to end, is it? Pretty soon, Ford'll get sucked up into it and we'll be left with the General-Fo-Mopar-Co, who'll still be trying to figure out why they suck at designing cars... and the little Japanese guys saying "Yessss... Our payback for Hiroshima is almost complete... Soon, all of America will be driven insane by our boring, crappy but efficient vehicles that they need because they're too stupid to drill in their own country..." America's going to shit, and that truly makes me sad.

With Ford at under $2 a share and GM at a 60 year low at around $5, they're outta time and basically outta money, only have lines of credit.

Hopefully the gubament will bail out Ford too.

I think the Chrysler/GM thing will go through, but fall apart 5 years or so from now just like the daimler/chrysler thing did. It *WAS* nice of the germans to pick up the tab to bail them out this time though! :D

Maybe "Chrysler" is coming home to G.M. ?

Walter P. Chrysler was the V.P. of G.M. till 1920. He was also the Pres. of Buick at that time.

    :)

  17. chrysler was always a german company. Walters grand parents were Kreizler and immigrated to Canada . his father moved to Kansas to find work. Other spellings include Crysler which is a town in Ontario named after the family when they were here.
Gm guys who constantly work at annoying us mopar guys do not deserve access to the hemi much less even a ride in one. They should be stuck on their russian designed V8 forever. At least Ford had a connection with Mopar, the Dodge brothers being on the original board and manufacturing almost everything but the trans (REOLDS)until the end of 1913.

thats funny american companys? you better do some thinking about that because it says gm is american? the window sticker on my 08 silverodo says 85 % canada /dodge is 80% mexico i worked in buick and 70 % or the parts come from mexico /canada ..toyota and honda are 60 to 70 % made in indiana more than chevy or dodge so when you buy a so called american car who are you really supporting ? its not the 50s any more .

there is a a hole in flint who drives a silverodo around with a gm flag on the back buy union across the back window and a genmtrs plate on it when i see it i think what a moron that thing not even made here ..at least the 4 door truck is ..gm needs to do something but to me they sold out along time ago and now its going to bite them in the ass...

Where would they get any money to do this and why would they? Trading shit for shit just means you still have shit. Ignore loyalties here, guys. I'm looking at this from a business perspective. I'm a supplier to both and I've been a 'Jap' supplier and I'd take Honda or Toyota any day. Nissan was always the Chrysler of those 3 and Ford can't keep their mind straight for more than a week. GM just thinks they are still the biggest game in town.

What does Mopar bring to GM? Nothing. The only 'brand' name that means anything at Mopar is Jeep but GM already has 4x4s. Nothing GM has done in the last 5 years helps Mopar out, hell Mopar beat them to the punch with the Challenger. Camaro doesn't come out until next year as a 2010 model!

    This doesn't make business sense.

Buying up Chrysler does eliminate one of their competitors. Chrysler would bring the Jeep and the new Challenger to GM thus, no neeed for a new Camaro. Wasn't GM talking recently of saling off their truck lines? Chrysler does make a decent truck.

First off lets get the facts straight. The germans DID NOT bail out Chrysler Mr Eaton got greedy and sold Chrysler to Daimler. After the so called "merger of equalls" was finalized he walked away with a cool 54million dollar cash payoff plus stocks. At the time of the "merger" Chrysler had an 11 billion dollar cash surplus "rainy day fund". Daimler needed the money to go on a shopping spree buying into jap and korean auto companies and losing their ass with poor investments (kinda like giving a 10 year old $100 and letting him loose in a candy store). As far as made in america goes, out of all the auto companies foriegn or domestic out there Chrysler has the most USA made parts on there vehicles.

  26. I also heard about this possible merger, but also that GM may be gone entirely (doubtful) if economy continues down. More likely they'll merge with whoever, in order to survive.

This is partially the result a of many years of global economic mergers, trade agreements etc. After WWII the US "helped" Japan and Germany with industry & technology, rebuilding their factories etc., while many American factories simply retooled and returned to many of their old ways. It's small wonder why foreign car quality often exceeds ours. I also get a kick outta those "buy American" stickers on back of vehicles. I've had 2 Indiana-built Tundras & will likely get another one soon (still love the old Fords, I WON'T be restoring any old T100s or Camrys anytime soon!) Seems anymore about the only difference in any of the new stuff is the name. At least none of 'em are Chinese - yet. . . Maybe if I put a bowtie or blue oval on my Tundra the buy American folks would be appeased?

I work for Chrysler...not a good place to be right now.

The Germans did absolutely NO good for Chrysler. The Germans are the reason for all the cheap shit we are building today. They just raped and pillaged the company and cross charged Chrysler for all of the technology "sharing" that you may have read about.

I could see where GM would take Jeep and the minivans....but not the rest. They are already making some worldclass cars. Unfortunately, no one will look at them because of their past.

This was all over the Detroit T.V. stations yesterday. They were saying that G.M. has enough cash reserves to last about one year, the advantage of merging with Chrysler is that Chrysler has much more cash reserves and that might keep G.M. from filing for bankruptsy. They said on the news it's a 50/50 possibility right now. It's hard to believe that G.M. would be looking for a life preserver to keep it's head above water, strange times indeed!!!
