I'm trying to figure out what my bellhousing is out of. The only number I can find is L 284 or it could be L 294.. I think 8... I can't run the standard GM starter on my 31 because the starter hole is in the way! It has 3 holes to bolt the starter to the bellhousing if that helps.. thanks, Ritchie
pictures...pictures...pictures... The number you found is the casting date, it's from December 28th or 29, 1934 or 1954 or 64 or 74 or 84 or...you get the idea. If you could tell us a bit more about the bellhousing, and take a picture of it, or find a similar one for sale on epay or on google images then maybe we could help. Or maybe we could figure out that 3 bolt starters were used on Chevys from 55-72, and guess whether it has mounting ears on the bottom or what. ***uming it's a chevy, not another GM
three bolt mounting getting in the way of his starter sounds like a '55-'57 or pick-up bell. the starter bolted to the front of the bell. he's trying to bolt his starter to the bottom of the block. he needs another bell or another starter.
We have a few 55-57 chevy trucks in the back of the shop, so that sure might be the case.. here are a couple of pics thanks
just get a starter for a 70 chevy truck with a manual transmission, should fit fine. That bellhousing in the pictures is the style used from 55-72 (but not 60-62) in chevy trucks.
