    Hi all,

anybody have any thoughts on aftermaket window lift motors for 60s gm cars? I see a heap of offerings on ebay but wanted some thoughts before I buy amything. I have a 65 grand prix im restoring and the motors in that are still slow after a grease and service unfortunately

Have you lubed the tracks and regulators? That’s where most of the problems lie.

Hi there ss327. The motors aren’t great in a bench test unfortunately, fast one way and slow the other. Ive exhausted every way I know how to get em moving faster so curious now about buying new ones

  4. Are you expecting them to turn the same speed both ways? That's not how they work... Universal type electric motors such as those window motors are 'timed' and will turn faster in one direction, slower the other. That's normal operation.

I have found that if you can find a same year GM car that the rear window motors are usually in good shape.

Hmm, thats interesting. Looked all over the interwebs looking to see one being tested but no such luck so I’m really guessing at the speeds they should run. Would it be a big or small difference in speed do you think?

Unfortunately not many cars here in Australia thatbwould have had fast glass in those days. I can get uswd motors here but about the same price as having new aftermarket ones shipped

  8. It's tough to find data on this, but a 20% reduction wouldn't be considered as a large drop, it could be more. It depends on how aggressive the timing is. If you have an older reversible drill motor, you'll notice it runs slower in reverse. This is done to optimize power output but only works in one direction. The modern 'brushless' designs used in battery-powered tools don't have this limitation.

On your window motors, the 'up' function will require more power than 'down' (where you have gravity helping) so the motor is 'timed' to produce more in that direction. But excessively worn brushes will negatively affect 'reverse' disproportionally.

I just went through this on my 68 Olds last fall. The windows were very slooooow and the right one was almost dead. 1. Cleaned the old lube out of the channels and re-lubed em, better.
    2. I bought two motors off the bay and stuck em in, a tad better.
    3. Replaced the window regulator springs, a bit better but not necessary.
    4. Added dedicated ground wires (8-10g) from the motors to the chassis (GM grounded the motors to the door metal which means through the door hinges), noted improvement.
    5. Finally, I disconnected the power supply, ran a new 8-10G 12V lead from the battery through a breaker I attached to the firewall next to the convertible top breaker to power the window relay, left the ignition signal as normal.

They will take your head off!

And to be completely honest guys, I was in the middle of replacing parts when @Pist-n-Broke came up with the ground lead and new power supply idea. All I can say is I have owned that car for 28 years and the windows have never moved like they do now. I pulled up to a red light the other day, unhooked the top, hit the button and dropped the roof while dropping the glass at the same time. Green light, rolled away in style, Boston blaring from the 8 track.

Prior to the fix, I wouldn't have tried it! Talk about performance issues!

Can we run a new power lead and ground to the 8 Track Player to Enhance our listening pleasure?

If it's playing slow, it current hurt
I got lucky and found an 8 track head cleaner still new in the box. The juice was gone but they still sell cassette cleaners so I bought one just for the solution. It does sound better...I think. There's only so much you can expect from a 57 year old tape player and tapes.
