Hello, I recently bought a model a hot rod that the previous owner lost interest in. It had a 307 Oldsmobile engine and 700 R ******. However I don't have a clue as to what the rear is other than GM stamped on the ring gear. Any help identifying it would be greatly appreciated. I'll load a few pictures. so is 10-41 or 9-38 the date code? or the ratio? :)

Not chevy, they were closed driveline back then, and also never used that U joint. I'd guess olds/pontiac, but that's just a guess.

Did the 3/4 ton Chevy trucks use that style joint?

Count ring gear teeth. I bet it's 41, which makes the 10-41 indicating 4.10 ratio. The 9-38 may be date code. What is the bolt pattern for the wheels? Chevy were closed drive torque tube back in 38, so agree it may be another GM division like Pontiac or Buick.

I don't think so. Also, the cover bolt pattern is different on the truck in your picture, and the mystery rear end.

The lug pattern is 5 on 5.

I have a '53 Olds rear end that I'm putting in it and it looks a lot different than this one.

Your right crusher, they wouldn't have the rear cover I don't think. Lippy

I found a pic of a 37 olds rear, it has the separate rear cover, and the same Mechanics type U joint, but the front casting is a different shape. It's a lot closer than anything else I've seen.'

Hey squirrel, I just saw a '37 Olds rear on cl***icOldsmobile.com that has the same rear cover and the backing plates are the same as what I have. So it's possible it's a late '30's early '40's Olds rear end. Good to know.

ribs on the front of the center housing are flat on the Pontiac, angled on the mystery rear. The angled ribs on the mystery one look like later Olds centers.

37/38 Pontiac had that Lock screw 37 38 Pontiac rear.jpg beside the pinion shaft. Olds didn't have that. This being a 37/38 Pontiac third member from an old and long gone Ebay add.
