Technical GM S10 T5 confusion

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by '34 Ratrod, Feb 16, 2023.

  1. I'm looking to put a T5 behind a banger. My neighbor has an S10 blazer sitting in a field behind his house so I thought it would be a good source for a T5. I've searched online to determine what years GM put the T5 in the S10 blazer but what I've found is Wikipedia shows the S10 blazer from 1983-2005 had the NV3500 manual transmission and says nothing about the T5. Thus my confusion. I know I'm nuts but is wikipedia nuts also? What years were the T5s used in the S10 blazers?

Can you walk over to your neighbor's and stick your head under the Blazer? The two transmissions look nothing alike.

Is it a 2WD Blazer? If it's 4WD don't even bother walking over to look at it.

4wd is the one you want so you can adapt it to a torque tube

  8. Haha, now you have me second guessing myself as to whether it's 4wd or 2. When I get home tomorrow I'll take a look. I'm not sure if I can see under it tho, there's over a foot of snow on the ground .. I hate snow.

  9. The offset of the wheels should tell you if it's a four-wheeler or not. Take a pic. That'll save you from having to go under it.

Yeah, you might be able to tell from the engine compartment looking down.

.. also the earlier year T5's used the mechanical speedo. So its easier to adapt to an older car. I picked up a 1985 NWC T5 that I'm planning on using on my 1940 Desoto with a 265 Flathead motor.

If you search this forum and the Fordbarn early V8 forum you will come up with enough info to keep you reading for a couple days. Flaternie and V8COOPMAN have written several articles on the subject. V8COOP came up with a conversion to torque tube that really works good but involves a lot of machine work to the transmission. I did one that uses a completely stock transmission but involves a lot of steel fab work to the frame.
There is no easy conversion either way.
By the way, learn about gear ratios as applied to YOUR type of driving. There are MANY different gear sets available for the T5 and the S10 sets are not desirable. The #202 set is one of the most popular for hot rods.

    Thanks .
    I'll do some homework.
Been eyeballing a model A frame with rear still in it .
    Was thinking my 183 / 2.5 mercruiser engine and a T5 .
if I can run the rear and tube that would make it interesting .

Don't want to hijack the thread

Interesting thing is the Wikipedia page on the NV3500 shows something different. It shows the NV3500 was 93-03 behind the 4.3l

If you can get the last 8 characters of the VIN and the vehicle is new enough ('90 and up?), take it to your friendly GM dealer parts department. They should be able to call up a list of all the option codes (engine, brakes, trans, paint, trim, ch***is and body type, etc.) that apply to the original build of that vehicle. They might even be able to print off a detailed list of all this information for you.

Offer to buy him/her a soda for their trouble. Or bring him/her a couple donuts. Parts guys/gals LOVE donuts!

    I've owned three S10s, '92, '96, and '97. All 4 3s, all had the NV3500. I've got a T5 that, according to the I.D. tag, came from a '93 S10 with a 2.8 V6.

Yes, they did. The 1993-end 2.2l L4 S10's had a World Cl*** T5, with the customary longer input shaft, and a FORD front case pattern.

The early part of '93, the s10 still had the old style bell housing to gear box bolt pattern.

2wd blazer with manual, grab the whole truck - if it's junk get every single piece to convert another one - good $ or trade material.
