I received a 1956 Chevy Cameo pickup steering wheel for my tub project but I need to find a column that is splined the same. What years/ models would have the same splines?

Thanks in advance for the help.

They used the same splines for a very long time....1940s to 1980s at least. The problem is finding a column that looks right with that wheel, which means you'd probably want a 54-59 chevy pickup column, and cut off the steering box and put a bearing at the bottom.

There are two different GM splines sizes and I'm not exactly sure of the year change, but I "think" they changed in '68/69 and went to the fatter splines. Basically any column with the key in it takes different splines. Not what you want anyway, so it shouldn't affect you.

Thanks guys. I only need the last like 2 inches so I can weld it to the end of my F1 column and a guy that I did some striping for today says that he has one for me.

no, the splines on GM steering wheels are the same from the 40s into the 1980s....for example, I have a late 70s wheel on my 59 pickup column.

The size of the turn signal housing did change over the years, and the nut size changed, but the splines are the same. I've put 1980s wheels on 1960s cars, 60s wheels on 50s cars, etc.

Really early stuff from the 30s for example is different, with a taper and key.

Good to know. I do know that I couldn't use an early wheel on a column I had, so that is what I was going on. Also, all the aftermarket GM style columns that I have used have the fat GM splines.
