Can anyone tell me the year of this GM steering column and what each connector is for?? I think I got the connector with the 6 wires identified but not sure on the other wires and plugs. Pictures attached. Thank you in advance, Mike
Really? None of you are running late model columns in your rides? A couple of ****S I think. Wish I could help you with the connectors, but I can't. I will stand with you against the winers though. Good Luck.
SRS?, Turn Signal, Ignition, & Headlight Dimmer... It may be 93 & newer, that first pic I'm not 100% on
Only on my late model GM truck If he likes it right on, but on a traditional build it might as well be billet! Maybe my info helps anyway...
They look like **** in an old car, the ONLY car i'm running one in happens to be my '81 el camino daily, and i just broke something in my tilt coupler last night on my way home from work!! Truthfully if you want a new car buy a new car, dont ruin the best aspects of an old car by junking it up with out of place stuff
Mid '80's or so column. #4 is the dimmer switch, #3 the ignition switch, both operated by rods that go up inside the jacket below the wheel. Don't remember exactly what colour wires are what, but you can figure it out by pulling the wheel and the jacket behind it so you can see the turn signal switch, horn contacts, cruise controls, etc. Not that difficult.
THANK YOU..........this HAMB is the GREATEST! I see I got a few HATERS............."don't be hatin"............. I'm building MY FIRST STREET-ROD and DOING IT "MY WAY"............. The ONLY person that COUNTS IT'S me..........IF I LIKE IT, I GUESS that's what hot-rodding is all about............being UNIQUE and I can tell you, my ride is definitely a ONE OF A KIND. I have a pretty nice '40 Chevy coupe with a big block.....BUT, I can NOT take credit for that build because I bought it the way it is. On the other hand, MYK'S 30 is strictly my TASTE, good or bad. Remember, "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder". My '30 bones Sport Coupe will also SPORT a 4L60 behind a '60 SBC for those "HATERS" out there............."eat your heart out"..........remember, "DON'T BE HATINNNNN". I purchased this BRAND NEW tilt column for "creature comfort" and I'm pretty sure that I will be very happy once it is installed. For those who gave constructive criticism, it is highly appreciated. The first pic is the plug for the windshield wiper switch. If it has cruise it will be a small connector with small yellow blue green and red wires. The second pic is the turn signals and horn. The dimmer and ignition switches are mounted on the column and actuated by rods as stated earlier. Hth

We don't hate you, we hate the **** you're putting in your car. Do you understand the difference? You'll get a better reception here if you don't brag about how you're building a car with non-traditional parts. If you want to put a GM tilt column in your ride, but also make it look half decent, try finding a column from a full size van from the mid 80s or earlier. They don't have the switches all over them, so the column looks a lot cleaner, and you can put all the switches on the dash, where they belong.
Agreed, the HAMB is the greatest, however, no one on here is a "hater" and no one hates what you're doing. But...and this is a big but, when you come on here asking about ANYTHING manufactured after 1964, you can expect a bunch of ****...it goes with the territory. Good luck with your build, and I'd bet this isn't the only **** you'll get regarding that column...!!! Wait'll you take it to a rod run... R-
VS037 have you by chance taken the time to study the other guys builds Here on the HAMB which is for "traditonal" rods and customs with more "traditional" pieces on them? Those fancy dancy all in one steering columns may be the hot lick on a billet street rod but they just don't look right on a traditional custom or rod. Too fat, too cluttered with trinkets and too bulky. That is what the guys are getting at. I and a lot of others ran those in the past and they usually never look right in an older car or truck and end up looking like an afterthought no matter if you drag one out of a wrecking yard or doner car or buy it from billet parts are us. The next time you go to a show take a serious look at the interiors of early rods and customs. Does everything look like it actually belongs there or do some things look like they were stuck in without having a lot of thought put into the process just maybe because the car owner or builder happened to have that part laying around.
I have to agree that the "late" columns just look wrong in early cars. Yea I did it once way back in the 80s, (a 69 Caprice column in a red car) because "everyone" was doing it, but I would have been better off sticking to my own taste, I had always wanted my car blue, and never did like the way those big fat columns looked. Certainly we can all do what we want with our cars, but you should really look at how bulky those columns look before installing one. My avatar photo is by no means 100% HAMB compatible, so I refrain from posting pictures of and/or asking about parts of the car that don't "fit" here. If I had found the HAMB before I had a big part of the car done, it would have been near 100% HAMB friendly, but I didn't and it isn't. I think that it is fine to build any car you want, but the HAMB users and administration desire for the HAMB to be about TRADITIONAL cars, and all would be better if us users abide by these wishes. This IS NOT a "street rod forum" and it never will be. (You should avoid using the term "street rod" "rat rod" etc. on the board.) Posting "off topic" here might be comparable with firing up a big old blunt at a DEA convention....
Hey 39 allford, good thing I put that GM column in my 53 Lincoln or you would be without. Now that thing was bulky So when did disk brakes, overdrive automatics, chevy truck trailing arms in anything but a chevy truck become traditional? Outside of Nascar that is?
No Offense taken- I know how you feel. You should see how the guys with ORIGINAL Model A's feel about me making mine into a street-rod. I can understand. In some respects, although mine is NOT period correct, I still want certain things to be nostalgic. For instance, I want my ride to look pretty much original at first glance...hence, NOT chopped and running full fenders. On the other hand, it has a 112" wheel base and parts from all over the place. I can't wait to get it on the road. Been wanting to build a street-rod since high school, I'm 64, and living the dream! Thanks to all for all the great input.............and also for those that chose to vent a little. This is healthy and I respect your opinions. LG, Mike
LOL, yea, I bought the column for the box it was hooked to so I could send it to Lares? to be rebuilt and my Lincoln wouldn't be down while I was waiting for it. Funny thing is I got it rebuilt but still haven't put it in. The box seems to leak less than it did before... Anyway, I think we will both agree that a big fat column doesn't look as big in a 50 Lincoln as it does in say a 39 Ford.... (I didn't like it in my 39 at all) I SHOULD have stated my opinion differently. There are for sure things I don't post about my 39 on the HAMB, like the disk brakes, 4 link, independent suspension etc, but that was kind of my point. I am not trying to be a smart *** anywhere on this thread, if it looks like it, I don't mean it to, and thanks for the Lincoln parts!
As you have discovered,there are a lot of police willing to make sure you tow the traditional line. The fact is, back in the post-war era, guys weren't trying to build anything traditional. They were using what they could find,scrounge,afford, modify and renovate to make their cars look better and run faster. If they could have gotten brand new stuff for their cars, they would have done so, no bones about it. If this were strictly a discussion board about cars built between 1945 and 1964, then we could truly discuss if the parts on it were traditional. But, one could argue, all our hotrods built after 1964 are not traditional, but built in a traditional manor or built as a tribute to tradition. They are not and cannot be traditional. So,what you put on your car is now debatable-and we will. Bottom line, continue to build your car your way-most HAMBers won't ever see it and there are plenty of street rodders and general public folks who will think it's cool. The key to the HAMB is to post your questions here about the "traditional" stuff you are using, but look elsewhere for information about the controversial stuff. Good luck with your build.

From notes I have: 88 GM column wiring for turn signal switch E - tan from drivers door switch for key buzzer ground with door open F -Light green from "key in ign switch" warning buzzer G - black to horn switch H- Light blue to left front turn signal and left turn dash indicator J - Dark Blue to right front turn signal and right turn dash indicator K - Brown from hazard flasher L - Purple from turn flasher M - Yellow to left rear turn signal/brake light bulb N - Dark Green to right rear turn signal/brake light bulb P - White from brake light switch
Don't panic, google search would have saved some **** burnishing, not all of us can afford $300.00 + IDIDIT columns but the '70's caddys with tilt & telescope are a bit gaudy.
