While I got a little bit of "down time" between engines on the Hackmobile, I figured I'd tear down and either store or discard all the various engine and ****** clutter that I got all over the place here!

Got the Vega motor down to a bare block for easy storage...and I just can't help WANTING to use one of those silly engines in something down the road...so having a bare block and ****** case on hand would be great mock up tools for later.

(Possibly, a little four cylinder T-bucket for my oldest niece or nephew...something they could drive that would be fun and NOT be a loaded gun in the form of a fire breathing V8!)

Anyhow...I've always just removed and replaced ******s...never tore one down before...what should I look out for, where should I begin, and would I need any special tools?

Obviously, it has a trans pan, and the tailshaft housing looks to be removeable, and there are bolts inside the bellhousing area...where do ya begin when diggin' in to one of these things?

    ****** guys?

There's a video available from Eastwood. I don't know if it's any good or not, but I've always been curious. Maybe you can get it somewhere cheaper.

If you're planing on using it some day don't tear it down till that day because steel valve body parts will rust up if left out on the shelf in your garage, the springs will dissappear, etc. I just did a 350, same basically asa Vega ******. There are two "special tools" one is fr the low/reverse clutch piston and I used some all-thread and a couple of bars of steel with holes in the middle to put the all thread thru, a couple nuts and a couple of deep sockets to space the bar inside. The inside bar could be a "U" shaped bent item, (I'll make one next time" or something rigged up from a steering wheel puller star.)
If it needs bushings, and thay usually do, there's 19 different ones, but I found that mine werent all out of tollernce and the ones that were, were the same size as a Dana pinion I had sittin around so I used it for a driver.
I usead a cabinet maker's bar clamp to depress the ac***ulator cover and install it's retainer.
Get the HPBooks Turbo-Hydramatic book and read it.
book mark where the torques and proceedures you need to follow because it jumps around a bit on stuff, but I've done rebuilds just following along with it.

    Just remember, Hospital clean!
That's why youshouldn't tear it up and leave it if you expect to ever use it again.

Yea, I have a bare case bolted to a SBC block for mock ups too.

<font color="green">A little trick Crosley taught me on the front pump removal.

Set the ****** on the pan, on the ground.

Get a length of chain long enough that you can bolt it into each of those threaded hole Dr. J spoke of.

Sitting on the ground facing the pump, put one foot on eachside of the bell housing and yank that chain. (the one bolted to the ****** [IMG])

That ****er will smack you in the nuts before you know it!

Don't throw any of that **** out!!!

Ha Ha...it's a garbage Metric ******...if I do end up using it for something, I'll have the local trans guru hide some better internals in the trimmed down and streamlined Vega case...either that, or I'll just have a lighter mess to carry to the curb!

    Metric?

    Throw that **** WAY out!

    <font color="green">Well,

I was told you could just turn it on end with the shaft down, pick it up a couple feet and let it down with a quickness.

Should pop up into the housing.

Unless you have some sorta beast with a retainer of unimaginable design.

I see you skipped the nut smashing.

I'll have you know it is part of the ritual. [IMG]

Theres a small snap ring on top of the front planet that you must remove &amp; the rest of the guts will come out. DAVE
