Technical Gm version of a Columbia?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by borderboy1971, Apr 30, 2020.

  1. Did any other car manufacturer use a 2 speed rear differential? I didn't have my phone with me, but maybe someone can figure out what I seen yesterday. It was a 2 speed axle (sort of a banjo style), with 18" wire wheels on it with a very small 6 bolt pattern? The differential seemed kind of big as though it might be a 1 ton, but the small 6 bolt wheel pattern throws me off. Any guesses at this point? I'll get pictures next time I'm back there.

Going back to the early '30's, Auburn was one manufacture that used a Columbia "TWO SPEED" rear axle.

Obviously not the one you're asking about but Mercury offered a 2 speed differential in Cougar Eliminators in I believe 1970. Not a hot seller and not many of them out there.

I remember that article in Hot Rod Magazine about the 2 speed Cougar unit but it turned out to be a prototype that never made production.

Maybe you guys are talking about a Hone O Drive unit? They did produce them..but in very small numbers. I've never seen one in person. They made them for 8" and 9" Ford rears.
