Daisy's old truck is using more oil than petrol and it seems that 228cu-in engine parts are lots of money. Thinking of replacing the tired out 228cu-in GMC motor with a newer Chevy straight 6. Does anyone know if the bolt patterns are compatable so I can use the original GMC transmission.
Not sure about the GMC's... I know when I was swapping different 6's in my '54 car that I saw one that had a different style side mount (it was out of a truck) than the '59 block I had. I was surprised with some of the different mounting styles from the various years. Patrick's in AZ is a great resource for 6 questions and probably has the answer you're looking for.
Taildraggin I planned to do that with the 62 chevy biscane I have. I got a good 6 out of a 80s chevy van , They do not fit chevy powerglides ,was I pissed off. The chevy 6 changed from around 62 .GMC may be different
The jimmy motor is a little longer...but that is only a problem when you try to put a jimmy in a chevy...it should be a really easy swap
I think GMC quit making a different straight six when GM brought out the new design in '62. I've not seen any info about them after that (V-6's yes, but not straight six's). I have a GMC 270 straight six that is a '60 or '61. Parts for them aren't cheap either, but if you can find one it should be an easy swap, and its bigger and more powerful than an old Chevy. Mine leaks more oil than it burns, gets 17 mpg on the highway, and will run down the freeway at 70+ with ease.
Thanks guys I try Patricks. Living on this side of the pond its a lot easier to pick up Chevy motors than GMC's, But if any UK hamber has a good 302 GMC straight 6 i'll take it off your hands.
