For a second I thought this post was going to be about Wichita lol moving ****s, hopefully this gives you a couple distraction breaks when people come over.
I know exactly what you’re going through. This past two months after moving to a new home and hauling 20 yrs of stuff to my “retirement home” and garage I’m wondering if it was worth it. The single story ranch with a 2-1/2 story garage seemed like a good idea. Everything was supposed to have been inspected and in good operating condition. so far I had to replace a fridge, microwave, stove, hot water heater and called repairmen for my generator and some circuit issues in the bathroom. Yesterday found a drain leak into my ba*****t from the shower and the past heatwave showed me I had to replace my whole 25 year old HVAC system. Retirement is supposed to be fun they say… At least my garage is in order now with plenty of storage and room to work.
Great way to clear things out and preserve cools items vs dropping it all off at Goodwill or the dump! I was about to PM you for details, then realized I'm out of town this weekend
I feel your pain I hate moving, especially the packing part. last time I moved, twenty plus years ago now, I started out good. labeling and organizing everything all neat and methodical creating a very thorough inventory. at the end I was just dumping entire drawers into boxes, crates, trunks. tape the box shut and label it for what part of house or shop it came from. I think there may be a few of those boxes buried in the loft still unopened. we talk about down sizing, but the thought of selling, buying and especially the moving makes it easy to kick it down the road.
Darn, I have an old dike bike I'd love to move on! I'd even throw in the 4 wheeler of the same size and vintage! Too bad AZ is 2 states from there, but I guess this means I don't send a "Ryan would like this" package to the old address. I also moved a house and shop back in the 2ks, and it's NOT going to happen again. Best of luck with all of this, it's going to be worth it, I hope. EDIT: just saw Eddy's post. ****.
@Ryan has an old VAT40 Sun charging system tester that he was kind enough to store for me for the last several years. I have as of yet been unable to get down there to retrieve it. If anyone wants to grab it from him please be my guest, it is yours for the taking! I bought it out of a shop that was closing down in the Austin area.
Did the same thing 12 years ago after 69 years in the same place. I'm a saver. almost 60 years of rod magazines. piles of left over parts. etc. everything went to the south storage building (50X90) at the farm, neatly organized if I need to find something. Fast forward, 4 different break in's my neatly organized piles ****tered about all over the building, If I ever move again (thinking about Prescott even though I'm 81) I'll call the dumpster people. The stuff at the south shed can go to whoever buys the land after I die.
Be glad that you’re YOUNG, not 79. I feel your pain. I’m just now getting the old shop emptied out and ready to unload the trailer of its overload of engines, transmissions, rear ends, frame rails and other stuff that I’ve forgotten about since last October. I hope that I have a plan where all this stuff goes. I’ve moved so many boxes that still need unpacking and placed on the shelves, it seems never ending. We won’t go into the job the movers did not labeling the boxes and unloading them in no order. Unstack and restack. When that’s done I can finally go get my cars!
Dam it @Ryan ! Looks like I missed my chance at scoring a couple of those elusive Union tool boxes! Oh well, I guess there is a reason that I don't fly on commercial airlines anymore! I hope everything goes smoothly for you as you relocate to some place in Colorado. Again as mentioned before, make sure you really do your research and move to an area where the water table isn't goofed up! Good luck from Dennis.
Now it comes to the part where cheap people like me have to choose to either spend the time fixing it all personally or sub it out to keep working on cars. The cheap is strong in me, but life is getting shorter. That's the way I'm going to do it, I've moved enough not to care and organize when I get there. I do think it will be easier to sell stuff here then where I'm thinking to go. I should consider myself lucky, I've always been in a small space so I have to be picky with collecting things. I'm planning to get into a larger work space at the other end of the bell curve of life. I can only see a few more pieces of equipment coming into my life in the future.......then just build, drive and sell. That's the plan for now, but as everyone knows life has a funny way of screwing with you......
@Ryan , is this a move across town or a permanent move to the Pacific headquarters ? Either way, good luck. My wife and I bought a new home ( new to us ) 11 years ago. I still have unopened boxes on the garage shelfs. Glad I went to the trouble of boxing up all the junk
Heck, we are planning a move in the future few years and I am looking around like "Oh **** what did I do!?" Do I pack up my 1925 lathe? Sell it? Who would buy it?? Can I tow 5-8 cars and projects plus all of the specialty tools, art, memorabilia, plus my clothes and **** AND the clothes and **** of the other 6 members of my family across the country? Sheesh....might be easier to stay than even think about it all....
I feel your pain and frustration, you are not alone. 16 years ago I/we downsized from a property we owned for 30 years, including my Took & Die shop/ business, I retired, closed the business, all on the same property not realizing we had a case of hoarders disease., not TV show level but we had a LOT of stuff, I was 62. WE moved to our Paradise property in the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin. Our home, shop Property was an easy fast sale. The house stuff and shop, all that was sold pretty smoothly, a lot given away, I'm a big believer in payback/pay forward, some thrown away and buyers seem to be different breed than today, courteous, respectful and appreciative. We are downsizing again most likely for the last time, age and health issues have caught up with us, not moving, just clearing out some for the future, the world has changed in so many ways. Dealing with buyers today is a mixed bag, 50 % normal nice people and the other 50%, a giant PIA, rude, disrespectful, want everything for a nickel on the dollar and think they're doing me/us a favor. I never had any problems through the years buying or selling anything, today it's a different ball game. Good luck with your project, you will "Get R Done". Free advice from an old Timer now, remember you will do this again, not that many years down the road as every year the clock runs faster. A side note, I and many, especially us old timers appreciate You and the HAMB, Thank You Sir !
