Go carts ok? Indy styled go cart rebuild

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by anthony myrick, Dec 20, 2024.

  1. Plastic was busted in several places.
1/2 a wing missing. Unknown plastic. So we improvised.
Made the wings out of scrap aluminum. IMG_3674.jpeg

  2. Students made patterns and we bent the spoilers at our HVAC class.

  3. I like it. Do you have a plan?

  4. It’s a project at school. Plan it to get that thing gone. Supposed to be a Christmas present. The owner has had issues getting parts. It might not be completely functional by the 25th but it will look cool. Santa has has a parts chain issue this year.

  5. Body was busted and missing a couple chunks. We found out an ABS plastic welding rod stuck to it. We have a nitrogen plastic welder and fired it up. For the back side we used staples to stitch up the cracks. Tool looks like this
    IMG_3899.jpeg
used parts of the original wing to weld back into the body. Even heated and contoured them to fit

  6. After that we used panel bond as a filler material.
Our first try failed due to a product issue. Crap didn’t set up. Cost us a few days but we finally got primer on it
    IMG_3877.jpeg

  7. Also had to straighten the frame
    IMG_3898.jpeg
right side wheel was about 3/8 back as well.

  8. Added some structure on the front to mount a skid plate to protect the front
The visible parts of the frame are blue. The rest is black for EZ touch up.
    IMG_3876.jpeg

  9. Our booth is down so we shot it where the old “booth” used to be. A curtain and a roof vent
Old school wet the floor and shoot.
    IMG_3893.jpeg
The wings drying in the classroom. It has better heat.
    IMG_3890.jpeg
had to check how it’s gonna look IMG_3891.jpeg

  10. This is where it’s is now.
Owner has more parts coming. Still have to finalize the pedals
Originally had some kind of hand controls. I’ve never seen em. So we welded some mounts for pedals in the frame.

  11. Someone is going to be over the moon, when I was a kid my grand dad built me a bicycle from parts he scrounged at the dump, it wasn't new or perfect but I was the happiest kid in the neighborhood that Christmas. HRP

  12. Yep. Can’t hardly imagine waking up to this
It’s got some odd ball pieces I hope the guy can find. Never seen a go cart like this.
    Here is the drive sprocket
    IMG_3866.jpeg IMG_3865.jpeg
the single drum mounts the this plastic sprocket
The sprocket slides into webbing on the back side of the wheel. The thin slots.

  13. Slides into this

    here’s the set up together

Parts for those are made from unobtainium. They were promo karts never really sold retail. Best bet is to convert it to a 1” axle and 30 series CVT TAV II. Get rid of the plastic rims too.

A GoKart site I’m on we get people all the time looking for parts for those and there just aren’t any. But atleast he got an early model with the steel tube frame. (A good one) The later plastic pan/frame is total junk.

That's a rabbit hole I've peered into a couple times. The later vans, and prowler miniatures. They are out there, but you gotta beat the bushes and have the funds ready to go when one turns up.
As said a lot of them with the bodies were promos, little billboards to sell stuff.
If you have searched for parts, this place is probably the most easily found.

Kool stuff. Always interested but never got into it. I always dreamed of something like this but life got in the way. This was from mid 80's but still slick. They were gettin lap times as fast as the nascar guy would. img658.jpg

  23. We got it this far.
The tubes for the tires and a couple other issues have knocked out the Christmas deal.
so the dad has a plan B ready.

  24. Got the pedals figured out. They adjust and so does the cable bout with the gas pedal
The brake rod can be shortened or lengthened as needed

Not to be a dick but those are MANCO styled pedals. They are on backwards (on the wrong sides). They were made that way to keep your foot from sliding off the pedals. Looks great otherwise.

  26. Hang on. Just looked at the pic. I’ll swap em around when we get back on it :)
I’ll probably straighten em out some and ad a piece to keep the foot from slipping
