Excellent! Love the white haired lady and matching dog. Speaking of loving riding in old cars: We were dogless, then a lady friend asked us to dog sit Reggie every couple weeks, the bigger dog on the right. We fell in love with him and had to have our own Reggie, so now we have Buddy on the left (and still watch Reggie). Getting to the point, Reggie will not set foot in the garage. I put him in the hot rod once, he shook in his bones the whole ride and won't get near it again. A sweet dog but a puss. Buddy on the other hand hung out with me in the garage since he was two months old (that's him on my hood <-), he's afraid of nothing. I can be grinding metal and he'll put his snout so close I have to push him away. Hops in the hot rod un-provoked and can't wait to go. Only down side is he keeps walking off with my parts!

Was working on the daily trying to get rid of the pesky 'check engine' light. When putting it back together some of the parts were missing, then I couldn't find my Rx sunglasses. Those high energy sporting breeds (Wirehaired Pointing Griffon) don't like not getting all the attention. I found the car parts in the yard but still can't find my glasses - as I write this she is laying on my foot. They say this breed acts like a puppy their whole life, hard to get mad at her!

Reminds me of something that happened to a friend of mine. He was asleep and woke up to the sound of his Coon Hound chewing on what he thought was hickory nuts. It turned out the dog chewed up his dentures.

    ON LOSING A DOG

    DECEMBER 3, 2014DOGS

In his grief over the loss of a dog, a little boy stands for the first time on tiptoe, peering into the rueful morrow of manhood. After this most inconsolable of sorrows there is nothing life can do to him that he will not be able somehow to bear. – James Thurber

In July of 2004, my brother James held Dutch, his German Shorthaired Pointer, for the first time. On November 20, 2014, James held Dutch for the last time. After ten incredible years Dutch succumbed to the ravaging effects of hemangiosarcoma, a deadly and unfortunately common cancer in dogs.

Ten years, that’s the deal. The lucky get more time, far too many get less. But we all must inevitably face the end. That end – the only end – is heartbreak. When Dutch died I held James and we cried. I wasted no breath on neat and impotent words. James howled an ancient pain.

Some admonish, “While epidemics rage, wars destroy and poverty runs rampant, your sorrow is for a dog?” Some miss the point.

I had given orders which brought death to thousands. Yet here I was stirred, profoundly stirred, stirred to tears. And by what? By the grief of one dog. – Napoleon Bonaparte

The point is this – each and every one of us is alone. Profoundly, inexorably and inescapably alone. We have family and friends with whom we share parts of our journey and parts of who we are, but it is impossible to ever truly understand the experience of being anyone else. We are each stuck inside ourselves with no one but ourselves. Scary, I know.

There we are, stumbling through the darkness, finding our way when we see a wagging tail and we’re made a simple but profound offer. “I’ll come with you!” says a dog. A dog has no journey of their own, no thoughts of past or future, so they give themselves fully to us in a way no person ever could.

James accepted Dutch’s uncompromising offer and for ten years Dutch followed James from Boston to Washington DC, to New Jersey and finally to Chicago. Cities and circumstance changed but Dutch never did. No matter what and no matter where, James would come home and find Dutch wagging his tail furiously with a bone hanging out of the side of his mouth like a cigar. To be greeted at the door by a dog like Dutch is to know, if only for a moment, what it feels to be completely accepted and unequivocally loved. And oh what a feeling that is.

In Washington DC James was a police officer in the narcotics division. He became all too familiar with poverty, addiction, crime and violence. You can never let go of all the things that weigh on you, but you can always count on a dog to help carry that weight. I remember one night when James came home after responding to a particularly harrowing shooting. James didn’t say much and Dutch didn’t need him to. With a deep sigh James settled into the couch, Dutch jumped into his lap, and the two held each other in silent comfort.

I have a Scottie. In him I find consolation and diversion… he is the “one person” to whom I can talk without the conversation coming back to war. – Dwight D. Eisenhower

That’s what we do – we hold them close. We hold our dogs so close that parts of ourselves overflow and fall directly onto their furry heads. So when we look at our dogs we see our worst sorrows, our greatest joys and the deepest part of ourselves for which there is no name. The story of our dogs is the story of us.

Like our own story, a dog’s story ends. Just much, much too soon. We know that, yet we repeatedly subject ourselves to this wrenching pain. Why? I suspect there’s no shared answer, but there is a shared lesson. We must measure life not in loss but in experience. Through our relationship with dogs we experience not just man’s best friend. We also experience man’s best quality – unconditional, selfless love.

When Dutch died, so did the some of the best parts of James. But before Dutch died, he gave all of the best parts of himself to James. It’s a painful trade but it’s one James, I and you never regret.

There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love [to dogs] while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price. -Dean Koontz

As I’ve said before, a dog can’t change the world but they can change your world. And if each of us can pass along even a fraction of the unmitigated, world changing love we receive from our dogs? Maybe we can see about that whole changing the world thing.

Today we cry and howl. Tomorrow we wake up and change the world the same way Dutch did – one small act of selfless love at a time.

When the Man waked up he said, ‘What is Wild Dog doing here?’ And the Woman said, ‘His name is not Wild Dog any more, but the First Friend, because he will be our friend for always and always and always’ – Rudyard Kipling

    v The "Highwayman's" new girl.

13 years ago , I had to face the unhappy reality that my "shotgun" companion of nearly 12 years "Cinder" was NOT having a good life. She was sick often and in pain continually and it finally came time to put her down. One of the HARDEST things I've ever had to do.

Finding another "shotgun" rider of "Cinder's" caliber seemed a distant possibility, but I began to search the local animal shelters for likely "suspects".

Then, it happened! At the S.P.C.A. and Humane Society shelter at 887 Sherman St. in San Diego I chanced [ fate?] upon "Little Girl" a 2yr old lab-collie mixed breed, who, upon seeing me came right over and began "talking" to me. She had recently arrived at the shelter and was not ready for "adoption" yet but I put my name down as WANTING her right away! Luckily I was first to do so as "Little Girl" turned out to be the "pick of the litter" My special THANKS to Linda for assisting me at that time!

I went back several times to visit w her as I waited to hear that she WAS adoptable.

Each time I saw her I became MORE convinced that SHE was the RIGHT dog for me!

When, finally, the day came that I got the call to come claim her, we spent our first time alone together in the "get aquainted " yard. On entering the yard initially "Little Girl" ran about for a moment checking everything out, then came to me and sat patiently as I spoke with Julie [ Humane Society employee] about her particular needs. It didn't take but a moment to decide that she WAS coming home with me!

They called her "Little Girl" at the shelter because when she curls up into a ball to sleep she *looks* "little" but, just let me TELL ya [IMG];) when "She" stands up on her hind legs she is TALL enuf to take fresh baked cookies and bread OFF THE COUNTER with out a trace [IMG];) DID it a coupla times untill we caught on [IMG];) [IMG]:) she's part Lab, hence the appetite - -we HAVEta "ration" her food OR she'd be a 100lb dog right quick -- she's part "smooth collie" as well -- hence the super bright intelligence she displays day to day [IMG]:)

Shela, [that's Australian for girl, mate] {spelling intended} is now firmly installed in her new home. Dainty in her "necessary" habits, she didn't even have an "accident" the first night! She rides "shotgun" in 4RESCUE [ "Beulah" ] as if she were BORN to do so, is already "protective" of my wife Patti, and is learning her acceptable property boundries VERY quickly!

ever since the day I picked her up from the Humane Society where the first thing she did was jump into the driver's seat, sit down, put her paws on the steering wheel spokes, turn and look at me as if to say -- "Ok, I'm ready, git in and lets go!" She acted real disapointed when I indicated she wasn't going to git to drive the rig --

Nowadays, whenever she perceives the SAR rig being readied for a search loop, She eagerly presents herself to be strapped in to her shotgun seat whereupon She grins from ear to ear and displays her "I'm happy" body language as we pull out of quarters

On October 19 2004, Shela was an invited guest in the Viper Room on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood for the first annual Mammoth Mountain Forum members season starter shindig -- met a lot of folks -- made a lot of friends [IMG]:)

    http://snowchains.tripod.com/shotgunshela/

More routinely, her presence and character helps to calm accident victims and familys and ONCE her perceptiveness saved the SAR rig from being stolen, I believe, as She took violent exception to an individual who had approached it late at night beside the interstate whilst my back was turned and I was occupied with an incident.

She is friendly towards most folks, so those she isn't friendly towards -- well -- I TRUST her instinct!

I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to all those folks who assisted me in my quest for my new "girl" and who work every day to provide for, protect, and find homes for furry "people" like Shela!

    Happy trails,

    The "Highwayman"

  21. After reading Highwayman's post I was reminded of the day I first met my one and only copilot (damn this is tough). A very good and happy jack Russell whom I named Jack. He went almost everywhere with me car shows, vacations etc. I'll always remember coming home from work and there he'd be tail wagging and jumping for joy. On December 31st 2010, 13 years after he came into my life, I said good bye. To this day I still remember the good times, though I haven't gotten over it yet. My point is this, always treat your pets well and you're guaranteed a long and happy life.

  24. I had to put my pup, Lucy down on Monday. She would have been 11 in a few months. Cancer got her. She was a lively playful pup up until the end. Thursday she was normal, Friday she wouldn't eat, Saturday the vet told us she had a stomach tumor that had ruptured and her liver and kidneys were shutting down. Her body had failed. By Monday she was gone, off to a better place. It was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.

8:30 this mornin, my beautiful copilot and angel dog Shela crossed the rainbow bridge -- We buried her in the garden -- where we kin see her grave outside the "readin room" window ---- in her younger days --

    IMG_1886.JPG

I was wishin that I had a sunny knoll to bury her on -- I had the grave dug -- I went to git her to lower her into it -- and LO and beHOLD! the sun, reflecting from the "readin room" window, ILLUMINATED her grave -- warming it FOR her!

I'm struggling to see to write this -------
