Technical GOD AWFUL FRONT SHAKE COMING OUT OF TURNS

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by BucketListRoadster, May 7, 2017.

  1. I can't fix your problem. But the the rubber hose wrapped around the brake hose is an issue for me. Just turn those bolts to the side and cut the extra thread off.

My roadster had the death shake running 85 in the eight mile and slowing to about 65-70 it had the shakes bad. Corrected the toein ti 1/8 inch and correct tire pressure to 28 lbs Fixed it. Run it up to 100-105 in quarter (its a flatty) and turn the sterring wheel loose and go straight and no wobble.

For what its worth...if I let my tire air pressure drop to about 20 PSI or less, I get wobble at about 50 MPH and up....air them up to about 35 PSI and no wobble from zero through as fast as I can run (which aint much with a banger).

I had a similar situation with my coupester. The ultimate cure has yet to be achieved - the caster still needs to be dialed back a bit more, from the current 9 to around 6 or 7 as Dean suggests - but rebuilding the front end and adding a Pete & Jake's steering damper has made the car safe to drive.

Ford did a service note way back in the '30s on this type of problem. Every part of the suspension can be part of the problem. Tyre pressure, wheel and axle alignment, wear in any or all of the joints, king pins etc. Small faults in different parts can add up to shimmy and shake that can be hard to pin point.
Start by checking and correcting those faults that you have found (like the shocks) and work through checking all parts for wear and alignment. No short cuts, just more work.
It worked for me - a couple of minor faults and a pot hole could cause mayhem.
