Goin' POSI - Locker questions...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Junkyard Dog 32, Sep 8, 2003.

  1. If the H.A.M.B. Drags tought me anything, it's this:

    I NEED POSI.
If it ain't hookin' up, it doesn't matter what you got.

So, I came home and started askin' around.
    This is what I found.
I'm told it's Auburn, and it was in a mid 80's Monte SS... The rearend in my deuce is out of an early 70's Firebird (10 bolt).
There was no ring gear on it. Will I be able to use it, and will my ring and pinion gears work?

I traded an old shotgun for the locker and $100.
What might it be worth? Just in case it won't work and I end up selling it.

    Thanks,

The monte rear is likely a 7.5" ring gear, the one in your car is likely to be a 8.5" ring gear. The unit will not work if this is the case. You should be able to find a posi unit for an 8.5 relatively cheap. GOOD LUCK

  4. either swap housings for and s10[4 wheel dr] [is wider than lil 2 wheel ones]or go to 9"ford and beef it all up.

Well I don't know for sure about the Monte SS's, but Grand Nationals came with 8.5" ring gears. If you've got an 8.5, it'll handle some ****, but you might wanna put stiffer springs in it. If it's a 7.5", (which came in the stock montes, regals, and about every other car, s10, or astrovan made since 76 ) You got screwed. I puked 3 of em in my 14 second Malibu when I was in High school.

BTW: It's a "limited slip", not a "locker", BIG DIFFERENCE
