going to have an experiment.

  1. It would certainly be unique, but, other than a v-twin exhause note, no real advantages.

Disadvantages? More cost. More vibration. Less reliability. Possibly less power and torque because you don't have a dynamometer to tune and optimize things. And you might need a m***ive flywheel to make it idle -- or even start.

I'm all in favor of doing crazy things with engines, but this one doesn't do it for me.

Now if you were to make an X-16 out of a pair of them, that would be pretty cool.

It would shake like a clothes dryer with a brick in it and probably rev real slow.

Flat, 180 degree cranks were popular in flatheads years ago trying to get them balanced better. You could probably find someone to grind you a billet crank but take your check book.

Lots of them in chevies too, well, maybe "lots" is a stretch. I'd check with Crower, pretty sure he ran them in his stock-block indy program, the Smoke played with them too, there have also been a few here and there in Comp, and pre-500" Pro-Stock small-blocks.

ok. it was stupid.. kinda funny.. mostly sad.

turned her over... and presto SHE RAN.. kinda.. .

very original noise. it was like * SSSSSSSsss KACK! KACK! KACK! KACK! KACK! KACK!
KACK! KACK! KACK! * then it threw a rod and the crank shattered like a wine gl*** and it all puked out the shattered oil pan .

check this down as a failed experiment.

next on the list. .. who knows.. im still sober.

I like people who think up stuff like that. I bet some of these blokes would have told Smokey he was on crack if he had asked them about moving the crank centerline on a Hudson.
It's people who think outside the box that come up with the great stuff. Whether it would work out? who knows. My guess would be a shaker. I'd also bet there isn't much you can do to an sbc that hasn't been tried, and if it worked out you will find someone who has one.

  19. He might just be chasin' the dragon. Maaaan there is nothing like lookin' at the world through an opiate haze.

I would think that the crank loads would be excessive. But what the hell if ya got money to waste it might be cool. Couldn't cost more than 4 or 5K to have a billet crank made then whatever the cam is worth.
