Gonna change front 5.5" Bolt pattern...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Curly, Dec 1, 2003.

  1. I had enough...I can't find a good set of Ansen Sprints in a 15x4 with a 5 1/2 Bolt Pattern for this old Ford frontend.

I did however pick up a set of 15x4's with the Chevy 4 3/4" BP. [IMG]

I have no problem indicating the drum and hub up on the Bridgeport and popping a new B/P in them. I do however wonder who has done this in the past and what studs did you use. I'm not asking if grade 2 bolts would be cool...I know better than that! I was wondering if I should look for a certain length , shoulder/non-shoulder, head type. That kind of info is what I need. What kind of fit did you use for the new studs? I presume it would of course need to be an interference fit but how much?

    Also..........

Check the size of the center hole in the rims verus the outer diameter of the bearing hubs. [IMG]

I know that on the 56 F100 hubs.........they have to be turned smaller..........don't even ask HOW I KNOW........

  5. this is how i figure out what studs to use, measure the thicknest of the hub AND drum together....this is how long the knurl should be. will you use 1/2" or 7/16"...????????..7/16" is what chevy uses, that's the 4-3/4" pattern.... go down to napa and look through their book(they are listed by size and have all the dimensions in the book) until you see one that will work. i like about .015 to .025 interfearance fit. the diameter of the knurl you pick might depend on what size drill bits you have

  6. Don't know how big you popped the holes, but, I prefer threaded studs.
I've used allen bolts the heade clear almost anything, but you can buy threaded studs from Strange, or Summit racing, or any number of other places pretty cheap.
If you use allens, if I recall 1/2 20 x2-3 is a good starting place. I think the ones on the F-Truck are 2". You can buy them with the shank threaded all the way to the head. You might have to relieve the hole a little on the back side.
I normally run mine long with the nuts open on the end. But you can cut them to the length you need to fit the type of nut that you use.

Don't want to use an adapter??

  8. I was thinking about using an adapter. Problem is the rim is only 4" wide and I hate when they expose too much brake drum. I like brakes for the safety factor...not because I think they look cool.

Curly....too bad you didn't post this 2 weeks ago. The axle I purchased from a buddy came with 40 ford hubs, redrilled to chevy bolt pattern. I traded them to a friend who needed them and he gave me a pair of 40 stockers. Sorry, they're gone but here's a photo of them for reference...

  11. Thanks Rocky....Missed it by that [><] much.

Your pics did give me an idea though.

Would it be possible to mount the drum late model style? I mean if I run about .010 - .015 clearance on the stud holes on the drum and slip the drum over the studs that are mounted in the hubs do you forsee problems? [IMG]

No problems if the drum fits snug on the hub at the center hole. If the drum isn't centered on the hub, there's gonna be trouble.

  13. Yep...that's what I thought when I saw that register on your hub pics. That lip is the key to the whole taco.

Man, I've got insomnia and I'm up at all weird hours and yet you post? You got a sickness my friend! Thanks for the input.
