I must agree with the above stated. I'm a musician, but I'm in it to play music, not dress up. A lot of conforming non-conformity in certain genres.... And in any of these I find the obligatory 'look' somewhat silly... However! I do think that stage presence requires some flare. Jimmy Page has a great quote on the subject, which I cannae remember at the moment, but the jist is: the people paid good money for a show. Give um a show. So it's a fine line I guess? I don't know. Estoy hablando por los codos....
This all started out fine. People contributing suggestions of good music for the OP, and the rest of us, to check out and make our own determinations as to whether it suits us or not. What could possibly go wrong...? Well, let's just say that 'recommendations' and 'criticisms' are two entirely different things, and have a vastly differing effect on the direction a conversation will take... Rewind back to post #15..........reset..........and let's go. I want to check out some more good music.
You can go to different threads on the hamb and see that the same people are just simply negative. They must lead a miserable life, and want to bring others down to their level. When I first joined, I'd get pissed off, now I just hit the ignore ****on on those people. Then when you see **** going down, and posts that make no sense, you hit the "show ignored content" and it's clear what's going on. Try that ignore ****on. It makes the hamb a lot better place to visit.
Ok then.........I apologize for getting involved earlier ,post #31, I was feeding on what I saw in front of me and not starting at the beginning of the thread.. for that I am sorry....my hands are now layed out flat in front of me...I'm ready for my punishment. Now realizing that I had entered at a time of negative activity that was not to the point of the actual thread...I now start at the beginning....ok ok ya..got it. Well ...I don't really have much to say ,other than good luck and hope you find what your looking for , Im not a fan of the modern Rockabilly movement and as I say that I realize that I'm not being fair about my judgment because it's based on the images of the modern rockabilly bands and followers . Just don't get where that style came to be from what there was in the past..... Maybe it's a getting older thing I don't know. But I did like the Hot Rod and surfing music of the day and started listing to the Stray Cats way back so to be fair to the musicians out there busting there ***es to entertain the people , Im going to check some of it out...but I'm going to call it Hot Rod music and listen to it the way I prefer.....kicked back in a dark room with the volume...ya..up there.
Check out Robby Vee (Bobby Vee's son) - great live shows, have seen him perform a number of times. Another one you might want to look into: Gene Casey and the Lone Sharks. They're both on my playlist....
Loads of great music out there. It can be tough with rockabilly because since it's basically a combination of country and rock and roll, bands can come in all over that spectrum. Some very country, some very rock. You've got a lot of the great acts covered here already. I'm glad someone mentioned Danny Gatton, who I feel gets overlooked as a rockabilly player because his musical scope was so broad. That guy could flat out shred. And he could wrench as well. A real shame we lost him so early. I don't think I've seen Junior Brown listed here. His work speaks for itself. The Hillbilly Hellcats, and more specifically Chuck Hughes, are a hell of a good group thats worth a listen. Wayne Han**** is probably more country than rockabilly but remains a favorite of mine. I also always go back to the two Mike Ness solo records, especially "Under the Influences", which could be described as rockabilly just as easily as cow-punk. But they have some sinister guitar playing by Chris Anderson, as well as a good, hard snare crack by the late Charlie Quintana. Nick 13's solo record is damn good, too, and is worth a listen even if his main act (Tiger Army) may not be your cup of tea. Edit: I also forgot Kim Lenz, who is very good and very much falls in the rockabilly category. I'm more a fan of country, folk, and Americana than rockabilly per se, and there are some really great artists I've discovered, especially as my Spotify recommends related artists. I don't know why, but for contemporary artists, I've come to prefer female artists to male voices.
Here's a few obscure Pacific NW bands: Leon Smith - Little Forty Ford Lord Dent & The Invaders And I haven't seen The Paladins mentioned yet. These guys have been around for over 30 years and still as good as ever. Here's a couple of them from the late 1980s
Danny Gatton, “the greatest guitar player never known” He had an amazing talent and was into hot rods too.
Man, great call on the Paladins. I totally forgot about them. Dave Gonzalez came out and played a show with a local act here in NJ a couple years ago and he absolutely killed. Great band
I tend to lean towards the really early stuff. When music was very basic and not overproduced. It has a genuine feel and sound to it. Hard to describe, but you know it when you hear it.
Of course all the cl***ics, Carl perkins johnny cash buddy holly and ofcourse the King of rockabilly charlie feathers, also dig Johnny horton But if talking modern Sonny roger and the King pins Hi winders Ruby ann John Lindberg trio Jack rabbit slim The hubcaps Mike teardrop trio Carl and the rhythm allstars / Barny Dragtones
I just like adding bands to my Spotify playlist. Keeps things fresh. Marty Robbins even did a little rockabilly before the whole Western balladeer life took off.
Here are some I didn't see mentioned that fall somewhere in the rockabilly/roots rock/early style rock & roll spectrum, with Spotify links: JD McPherson Delta Bombers Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys The Blasters Nick Curran and the Lowlifes The Modern Don Juans
Really good stuff there, much of the Wild records lineup is really good. The Rythm Shakers, saw them live couple years ago really good. More new/modern Harmonica Sam Sweet Mandy and the teen twisters Omar Romero Texabilly Rockers The Jetaways Lady luck combo Gizzelle Emmy Lou and the rhythm boys The Frettones Hi strung ramblers
A while back I found a Russian rockabilly band, Messer Chups. Maybe a little too psychobilly at times for some, but lots of surf instrumentals, 007 themed spy surf, for lack of better description, and some pretty odd horror movie mashups. ****es up a streaming station pretty well. I also like a lot of the late '40s early '50s pre rock music, even if it is a little more country than "rockabilly", it is what would have been listened to when our cars were new, and goes pretty well mixed with rockabilly.
Slim Jim Phantom from the Stray Cats has his Rockabilly Rave up show on SiriusXM on Sunday, he plays old and new stuff
