I need a simple automatic shifter that has a lockout function. The Gennie shifter in my coupe is really easy to bump into neutral....I need to change it out. I'd like to find one of the old Ford floor shifters that they used for many years on Mavericks, Cougars, Mustangs, Pintos, etc. They're really easy to mount, easy to run linkage to, and they work! I see them on ebay, but the prices amaze me. I've given away probably at least eight or nine of them over the years (maybe I should have saved some). Any other suggestions for a basic floor shifter that has a good, positive lockout?

Im very happy with my lockar. I knw it isn't the cheapest but compared to some of the ratchet style shifters i was trying to use much easier to set up. No cable its direct linkage and it clicks every gear like its stock. Love it and would recommend it every time

Go to the junk yard and get one out of a ford aerostar mini van. That's the first minivan ford built. It was not front wheel drive. You can't beat them for $10.00

I ended up building my own...not much money in it, but there is a lot of work.

Whats a Mustang or Maverick style shifter bringing these days? I was just at the big swap meet in Springfield and I could've tried to find you one.

I see a lot of those Mustang T-handle dealies on rods running automatics. I believe there's a ****on on the T for lock-out (or lock in park).

I spent all day Friday there looking for the same shifter. Found 2 from '71 mustangs.....both needing LOTS of attention. Price was in line with condition. A couple on ebay with decent prices....search for pinto or maverick.....cheaper than ones listed for "Mustang".
FWIW....64-66 Mustang shifters have smaller footprint in floor than later Mustang/Pinto/Maverick/etc

One thing to beware of with the old Ford shifters, they didn't have as much travel between P and R as the GM shifters.

So if you're putting the shifter on a GM transmission, and you get all the gears working, it won't go into Park all the way, and you'll learn about why Ford had that big recall....

I used a Vega floor shifter years ago on a Turbo 400. Used the Vega shift arm and shifter worked great.
Only problem, where can you find a Vega?

Chevettes had a similar shifter. Where can you find one of them?

I bought a mint condition Mustang shifter for $150. Cheaper than most aftermarket ones.

I'm putting it on a 727 TF.....I found a '65, but it's pretty sketchy. I have a couple other candidates to check out.

Squirrel, that shifter looks bad***! I've thought of building one, because that way I'll have to like it! ;)

lakesmod, I like the looks of that! I'd be interested to see some details....maybe even check to see if it'll work on a TF 727. Thanks for the heads-up!

in My 33 with 302/AOD trans. I adapted my Gennie Shifter upper to A 91 Mustang Lower unit as the Mustang has a Positive Detent for each gear, the Gennie unit alone can shift gears if you hit a pothole.

I am really disappointed in the Gennie shifter....if you say "move" loud enough, it'll shift itself. ;)

  20. I have a 67-68 Mustang shifter, pretty good shape, price will be right. PM me if interested.

Been awhile since I've had one, but they do have a tension adjustment on them to keep them put. Spring detent tension too.

I've tried messing with the tension, but with the straight gate, all that holds it in gear is the transmission linkage.

I can round up a shifter too if needed, probably out of a 69 or 70 Stang or Cougar.

On an OT friend's car, I built a tall handle shifter out of a generic GM floor shift. It had a lock-out, so inside the long stainless tubing I used to extend it, I ran a piece of teflon rod. Used a big "dice" for the shift knob, with a cut off bolt going into one of the dice dots, drilled out, with a return spring, for the lock out. Still working after 10 years for him!
