been driving the **** out of my car since i got it running ran into quite a bit of problems understandable.its a 54 customline with 79 302 and c4 last month i broke the universal on the drive shaft got a new one.cars been fine.now the problem over the last couple weeks i've been getting a grinding noice only when accelerating high then when my rpms drop for example when getting off the freeway.i pulled the drive shaft to see if it had any damage on the splines.in case it was loose inside the trans or anything else that would be obvious i've never had a rearend go out so i dont know what that would sound like.im guessing rearend trans torque converter.i cant tell exactly where noice is coming from any info appreciated.

This reminds me of years ago when I worked in a service station when a customer came in and wanted the rear end "grease" changed. I pulled the plug and out came very thick tar like stuff mixed with sawdust!!!!! Someone put it in to quiet the howl that came from it when real 90 weight was reinstalled. One of my finer memories...

Yes, what missy's dad said, jack it up and start pulling on your wheels to see if there's any slop, if not, still pull the wheels and check the bearings. Did you happen to grab the pinion on the rearend when you had the driveshaft off and see if there was any slop or play at the pinion there? Just easy things I would check first off if it were me. It's kind of a mess, but I guess you could drop your ****** pan and see if there's any metal in there to or something...

    That's a tough one man...sorry that's all I got at the moment.

Sounds like it's the pinion bearing,I've been down that road before. The vibration from the shaft may have loostened the rear yoke, pull the bearing inspect it,R&R if needed and re-torque to spec. While you are at it drain the case and replace with 80W140 Royal purple lube.

i got the car jacked up right now the rear brakes need to be done.one side has what looks like permatex someone used for a gasket between the backing plate and the axle.didnt see any fluid in there but i havent checked to make sure i even have gear oil in there yet.to check the pinion bearing can i pull the driveshaft out and try to move the 3rd member and check for play?the drums have a slice across the front same place on both drums im guessing this is a thing machine shops used to do?any info always appreciated.

Before you pull the driveshaft put it in neutral and push up and down on the shaft watching the rear yoke for movement,if you have to pull the yoke try your best to get the seal out carefully as you may want to take it along when you match up parts.

52Plymouth, the little "slice" that's cut across your drums(if we're talking about the same thing) is used to gap the brake linings with a flat-feeler gauge when the drum is on. Strangly enough, I just read that last weekend in my shop manual as I was going through it looking for something else.

hey 52 plymouth ,i have had similar problems before with 302 and 351 c4 combos in cars ive had .check your flywheel to see if it is cracked or broken, you can take the inspection cover off bottom of front trans area jack up back wheels and have some one start your car then watch for any wobble or movement or contact with flywheel on motor any where.you can also check your rearend for noise at this time .by putting it in gear.good luck . i hope it isnt serious.

I had a Chevelle about 30 years ago where the flywheel bolts came loose and sounded like the bottom end was coming out !

If it is a cracked flywheel, it may be small hairline cracks between the bolt holes. Sounds more like axle or pinion bearings to me. If it is a bad bearing the diff will probably be full of metal.
