picked up a 1934 ford on craigslist a few days ago, used to be a 3w coupe but the roof got cut off a long time ago, judging by the aging of that area. Had to have been an old hot rod. It has '53 lincoln 317 V8 coupled to a Hudson 3 speed w/ OD using a custom oldschool homemade aluminum adapter plate. Rear is a banjo with open drove conversion. juice brakes all around. i stuck the 33 commercial grill on there for the time being, it used to have a 30's chevy grill on it. the body is thin is spots, but very saveable. frame is Z'd heavy in the rear (super OLD and kinda scary). Front axle is dropped 4-5" and is stretched very thin and flexes really bad, I am replacing it with another '33 axle that is much nicer. can anyone ID this one or is it a homebrew job? Body is channeled 5" or so. It also looks like the rear has been pushed back a bit, probably when the rear Z was done. plans are to get the body back into reasonable condition. Some type of duvall/hallock style windshield, cap off the door tops, etc. A smaller radiator is in order, as well as dropping down that grill quite a bit. I also need to remove one head and replace one exhaust valve. It still runs but that onr cyl. has terrible compression. Some people have used the "R" word when describing it so I hope to rid it of that soon enough. The first major thing to do is rebuild the front end, it is super sloppy. anyways, on to some pics:
Looks like you got you an old hot rod there. Its a good start. If it were me, I would be trying to scrounge up some pieces to put together a top for it to make it a 3 window again later on.
Neat find...lots of potential there. Axle looks to have been 'Blacksmithed'...heated, stretched, then hammered on the drop, front and rear... This was an old method, likely done in a kiln and anvil-hammered. There are gents looking for 'dated' pieces like this axle, so don't think it's just a $40 or 'give-away' item. That open top Hudson tranny can be converted to a 'REAL' floor shift: It's a Borg-Warner, and I believe it would accept a Studebaker pickup shift tower, just by removing the inner shift forks. (check for position of low-reverse slider notch, some of the O.D. boxes reversed the slider, putting the shifter fork notch in front)
very nice score , alot of history there. if it was mine i would be looking to find a top for it to bring it back to a 3 window Jen
Bitchin. That axle is a wall hanger for sure though. Get it rolling and bring it to the Alter Boys show!
Nice find! If you switch out some parts let me know because I'm trying to finish my 1930 coupe but wanting to find some good old school parts instead of buying things new from a catalog. I look forward to seeing your pics as you make progress on your new toy!
thanks for the replies, i dont plan to change much but the front axle, radiator, and a whole bunch of body work. I also need new rear tires, they are H78 and dry rotted. can anyone suggest an alternative size? 760 comparable? should I step up to 800? Also, I may try looking into converting this trans to top shift like was said early Thanks!
