propper terminology would a logical place to start

  2. Castor oil is what to use.

Congrats on the find. There was a lot of manufacturing and machine work in Ballard at one time.

My first job was on 49th & 9th, right next door to Cappy's Towing, cutting electric motor commutators on a much, much smaller lathe.

That's where I learned about dressing flat belts with castor oil.

    Paul,
I am glad that you guys got that thing picked up. I buy a lot of tooling bits out of boeing all the time, and other machine shops around the area. They are still good for our standards. I will start saving the good ones for you. Hope to see you tonight.

    very nice looking machine........

looks 90% the same as the one i helpd my neighbor drag home......VERY heavy....we used my cherry picker and it was all it wanted.....

very smooth running machine......the ole' fella p***ed on, he used it for woodworking.........the ole' guy had rigged a motor on the wall.....but i'm sure they all used to run from the line shafts........your's seems to have a couple of updated features.......if i remember right, my neighbor thought his was around 1912 or 1915........

Speaking of old lathes, here's my G.L. Cady from Lowell, M***. 12" swing, 27" between centers. How old? I dunno, haven't been able to find out anything about this make. But I sure love the design of those main gears.
