Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by mctim64, Nov 16, 2009.

  1. Had a great time this weekend at El Mirage dry lake, Charlie let me get my "Rookie" run in the "Flyin' Yellow Brick" made two passes on Sun. IT WAS A FREEKIN' BLAST! I'm on my way to a Red Hat. ;)

Here's a video of the run.

Nice...you are a lucky SOB! That truck is the reason that I am building a truck for the flats. He holds just about every record for production pickup.

  13. OK! The story is that we built a new engine for the "Brick" this spring looking for more HP, but after one flat cam and another that wasn't living up to our expectations we canceled plans to go to Bonneville and take back the E/PP record there. After the depression of the canceled trip faded we went back to work on the engine, installed the old cam from last years engine and we were off to the dyno. The numbers came up the same as what we had with the old engine, so since Charlie didn't forsee and blistering changes in speed he asked if I would like to do my "Rookie" run in the truck. Duh!

Friday (11-13-09) I left work at noon to make a 4:00pm rookie orientation meeting. I got there at 3:45 to find that in Nov. because of the time change they moved the meeting to 3:00. So I missed it. The guys tried to get me a one-on-one but no dice. So no run on Sat. when the course was a little beter than so-so and the wind was at our backs. Sat at 3:00pm there was another orientation meeting and I made that one, then demonstrated a bail out and I'm good to go for Sunday. In the morning we wake to see a 7mph headwind down a new not so good course but that is all you get after three years of hardly any rain.

My best time on a 118mph record (held by this truck) was 110mph. I am a rookie and did not wait long enough to shift from 3rd to 4th and if you listen to the engine in the video you can hear that the RPM stays pretty stedy in 4th. Also if you watch the guy on the bike that takes off before me you can get an idea what the dirt was like, soft!

Next may we will be back and hopefully there will be a rainy winter to pack the lake bed. Charlie said I will be able to drive the truck again and he will be happy if I break his record. After all he is building a new car to get him closer and maybe into the 200mph club.

981 holds the E/PP record at El Mirage (118mph) and Maxton (120mph) it had the record for a few days in '08 at Bonneville (122.6) with a top speed of 124.6 but a guy in a long cab Dodge took it away by 3mph. I hope to do 120 + N/A at El Mirage next year then the old 258ci Y will get a********* :D.

Gotta ask a question of you guys who have done it. What does it feel like to drive onthe salt vs on the dry lake. Some have said the salt is more slippery but how do they actually compare. I have some experience driving on a traction compromised surface, as I have ice raced cars since the mid 70's. I have seen just north of 90 mph on the ice, (State Police radar used for speed check) and with the tires we use it felt pretty stable. Just wondered what 100 plus feels like on the salt and dirt.

Cool deal, I hope to be there next year and do mine. We'll see.

  29. That's awesome Tim! I imagine it was fun for Charlie to watch the brick fly, too...

I would think the I-beam in the F-100 would be a white-knuckle ride at 100+ on the lake bed, eh? That's way cool, I'm jealous...
