Yeah, you're a cheap, dirty, grumpy old fart. I guess I am too because I was a little put-off by that how-to article in Street Rodder too. The "before" photo of that pickup looked like it was already on the way to being beat up anyway! It appeared to have a little legitamate road rash but it looks like they fixed the boo-boos and then started with the aging and pseudo rust makeover. Go figure. Now, street rodder is gettin on the "patina" bandwagon. Here's some patina for ya!

In the words of Billy Joel:

"Dontcha know about the new fashion, Honey?
Ya can't dress trashly till ya spend alot of money.."!!

$50,000 kit rods dressed in primer and fake bird shit. What yuppies won't do to be trendy! [IMG]

The best patina is created one day at a time....preferably at a high rate of speed....I like fake patina, but I like alot of stuff that I will probably never do to my car.

Funny how SRM is trying to create "High Tech Traditional". They've got the patina article, another article on Mooneyes Fake Strombergs with hidden EFI and they always feature a shiny "OldTimer". Guess they know which way the wind is blowing, just don't wanna give up on a few decades of "Billet is Better".

I DO NOT WANT THEM TO KNOW WHICH WAY THE WIND IS BLOWING! Jesus, that's just gonna ruin my fun. I don' wanna hafta elbow some fargin wanna-be greaser rebel outa the way at the next swap meet to get to a rusty old schoolbus STOP light wheni Know he's gonna walk out to the parking lot and slide behind the wheel of his 740 Beemer. He'll call his broker on his way home to sell ABC stock and generate a little liquid asset to finance his latest gennie 33 pickup rat rod project, using all pre-49 speed equiptment.
ARGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! I'll start turning out aluninum bits out on my handy-dandy big-boy lathe and bridgeport just to get a leg up on the next craze!
    as if..........

I like the primer & pinstripe look on my pickup, however I have never really liked the rusty relic look. I don't understand why someone would like to artificially patina their rig. That said, it is still their toy and if they want to drive it off a bridge, so be it! I don't think you have to worry about being overrun by artificial patina rigs, there are still plenty of guys that dig shinny stuff on their toys. This summer I had to walk by row after row of billet laden plastic dueces before I would find a traditional rig to look at and drool on.

I always thought it'd be neat to get some satin POR-15 clearcoat or something and cover up an old beat up truck with it, so that it'd still have that original "patina" (I really don't like that word) but wouldn't rust into the ground or flake apart when you rubbed on it. The only fake "patina" I've ever thought was REALLY appropriate was a big piece of artwork that R&C had a picture of from some car show last year. It was actually a fiberglass A body or something, but the artist had gone over it and set it up on a platform so it looked like some old farmer's shootin' car circa 1945 or something. It was really cool...

But aside from that, how hard is it to find a beat-up old rod body? Shouldn't it be cheaper than a shiny new one? They're not THAT scarce yet.

Looks like the funs over,if the big boys see a profit in anything they will ride it to its death.
Hey Ive got an answer-- lets create a diversion-- lets all secretly get together and make like we really love some stupid trend that we really cant stomach. Its gonna be tough, all the good ones are already taken--cryin dolls--one size fits all rear spoilers-- and dont forget 48" tall wheels. If they think its a seller, they might forget about us.Any good thoughts?

  14. damn if i woulda only knew... i would have just brushed on some clear coat over the old 55 and would have been set... [IMG]

Well, I will buck the trend here and say I thought both the Poteets and the featured in SR were pretty cool in person (very nicely detailed inside and under) A person you can tell the difference between patina new (I like to call it protina) and patina natural.. One is smooth and the other rough... Now I think it would be funny as hell for some big bucks guy to buy a Boydster and do the patina thing.. SPpend all that money and someday have to redo it again because he cant get 100k out of it (doubling what he has into it)...

What I do wonder is if they still get upset when they get some real roadrash or nicks/chips etc on their protina...
