I scored a 86 c10 pickup on craigslist to grab the 305 out of for my 65 panel. Here we are in my shop pulling the donor motor out of the c10. I'm getting some 350 heads tomorrow from a fellow HAMBer. I need to figure out which edlebrock intake to get and which Holley will work. And get some headers. The tranny in the truck was shot but I scored a 700r4 from a car for free. I just need to find the short shaft tail shaft.
There's your power steering too if you need it. As well as front disc brakes if you want the 5 lug pattern. Front sway bar too. I put pretty much all of an 84 Suburban truck under my 63 down to the brake lines, power steering, master cylinder, even a bunch of the electrical components.
I don't think you're gonna be very happy puttin 350 heads on a 305. Big drop in compression = loss of power. The cumbustion chambers in the 350 heads will be larger than they are in the 305 head and the valves will be larger. You're better off using the original heads.
I would unbolt the complete front crossmember and put it in the panel. Rear axle also...5 on 5 bolt pattern all around, modern brakes...Use everthing from the 86..Booster/master/prop valve, sway bar, steering box etc... Been done many times.. Makes a great , safe truck. Dave
I wound up leaving the 305 heads on there because of that compression thing. I plan to upgrade to a proportioning valve and 2 lines from the 86 but I'm leaving everything else alone.
That's a bad plan. The master cylinder and prop valve off of the 86 are for disc/ drum combo not 4 wheel drums like your truck has. It's super easy to convert your truck to the 86 front brakes without drilling a single hole, no welding, nothing hard. It's bolt on.
Can you give me specific reasons why it wouldnt work? Ive set up a few trucks an cars like this and havent had a problem one with adding power brakes to a drum set up using a proportioning valve installed on just the front brake line. Once you have it set correctly it works just fine in my past experences. BTW- Im the dude helping Xsspeed with this project. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o> </o>
Well after all these sundays (and some nights) we got it fired up today! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjFVvYLfzuM Hopefully be driving next weekend.
X2!!! This is a seriously economical way of getting that panel on the road with a complete '86 running gear, steering, x-member, rear axle, and more. Strip that pickup to the bone! It's a great donor for that panel!
