You can destroy a 700R4 transmission within minutes by driving it with an incorrectly set-up and mis-adjusted TV cable. What are your pressure readings?

  3. What type of carb and TV cable are you running?
preliminary adjustment-hold your throttle wide open(Engine off!)-If you have a Lokar cable-pull the cable as tight as you can-grab it with vise grips or what ever helps you-cinch the set screw-release the throttle-go for a ride and see if that is better-fine tune the adjustment by adjusting the nut on the bracket to tighten the cable tension a lttle more(again if you are using a lokar setup)
One way to tell when your TV cable is adjusted correctly is to put the shifter in drive-accelerate normal until the trans makes the 2-3 shift now plant your right foot-the trans should down shift.
Sometimes microscopic dirt can get around the plunger at the bottom of the TV valve-this will make you think your tranny is dying because it will not shift-to correct this have your engine running at an idle-grab the end of the TV cable with a pair of plyers and give it a couple tugs-you will feel it botton out as you tug on it-remember you are not cracking the throttle-only tugging on the TV cable-the pressure in the trans will flush the base of the TV cable.
Give it a try but as was stated before-your 700 will burn up fast if it is too far out of whack.

Yea I have the bowties one. I got it close but the cable gets bunched up at the carb. It's a holley 4bbl 600. I need to get a pressure gauge and do it that way but I still wonder if the proportion valve gets stuck when the fluid gets hot.

Hopefully I didn't damage it. I babied it and it was shifting somewhat.

That shit HAS to be right, every time all the time. It only takes a mile.

I learned this with one bad experience, my brother in law is on 700 R4 #5 in his firechicken.

Nothing can be hokey or improvised on that TV cable.

I won't beat the geometry thing, but overall pull length is just as important. To me it sounds like your TV plunger is sticking though (they get weak and lazy), Bowtieoverdrives has one to cure this for $10. I've also had the ferrule at the end of the cable in the transmission get stuck in the cable sleeve with the same symptoms you describe.

Quick update: I bought a Transgo Jr shift kit and installed it today. After some minor Bowtie TV cable adjustments the truck runs great! Now to put a killer stereo in it...
