So I was sitting here earlier tonight reading the Rocky=Goldchainer post and my son was sitting on the couch looking over my shoulder. He saw the picture of the two of us standing with Ed Roth and asked who he was. And so it began, we talked for an hour about meeting Ed Roth and I explained to him that "Big Daddy" had p***ed away. When we met him, Ed had given Isaac a couple of things, and I had squirreled them away for when he was older. Nothing big, just a little Rat Fink keychain and a small poster, but I figured now would be a good time to give them to him. He put the keychain on his dresser and we're hanging the poster up over his bed tomorrow. Tomorrow we're gonna start on one of the Monster models I have out in the garage so he can put that on his dresser too. I was blown away about how interested a five year old could be in someone like Ed Roth, and then tonight when I told him to go get a book to read for bedtime he comes back with my Hot Rods by Ed "Big Daddy" Roth book. We looked through it and I read him the part about the Beatnik Bandit before he fell asleep. Man it feels good right now. Had to share. One more Finkster out there.
And you just know that ol' Ed was lookin'down when all this was happening and smiling from ear to ear! Thanks for sharing. Ray
Wow that's great. I've been really excited with my girls interest in my roadster. She is only 4, but has amazing gasket s****ing abilities. Of course, meanwhile, the 2 year old is beating my ratchet with the dead blow hammer. It does feel good when they are interested in the hobby. I can't wait for them to take an interest in some of the history,as you've experience.
Done a few models with my 5 year old. Our newest was the Roth Mr.G***er model. He loves them. We've done a Ratfink also. At last months Roundup in Austin we picked up a Hotrods and Monster coloring books that Von Franko had done.He really liked those. You might be able to get them off his website but I'm not sure.
hAH ruined for life! Now it's doodling hot rods instead of paying attention in cl***, and later he'll be, to quote a R&C write-up, "hunkereddown in the garage, drooling muttering lines from American Graffiti to himself"...
Iremeber when he came up here to the Vancouver Motorsports show. The Rev and I went and met him and had a nice little chat with him. At the time, The Rev new wAY more about his accomplishments and what he done for Hot Rodding and the car culture in general, than I did. I just knew he made some really cool ****! He signed a couple shirts for us and The Revs mom gave us a couple of models at Christmas that he had signed for her. That was really cool! Anyway, just glad I got to meet him, fer a little bit anyway!
I think Ed Roth is a great roll model. His life took a lot of twists and turns. But he maintained is ethics all the way through.
When my daughter was about seven, I dragged out a bunch of old "Car Crafts" from the first half of the sixties and showed her the Roth/R. Williams artwork in the sweatshirt ads--her eyes were out on stalks!
Mr Roth has probably done more to get the young started in Rodding than anyone. He had a real softspot for kids, I can't think of a better way to get a young person interested than what you did friend. Make sure the little guy never looses his stuff that the Old Man gave him. If its cool now it'll be really cool when he's grown up. Good story
Right on. Ed was a family friend for many years. After he moved to Utah we lost track a bit. Saw him again at the RF Reunions and at Oaklands 50th. My 7 year old daughter remembers makin deals with Big Daddy trading nachos for jelly beans. He gave me my first job, folding his catalogs for a nickel a piece.
Yeah. I met Roth for about 30 seconds when he was signing stuff at Carlisle, mebbe 15 years ago. I bought a comic book just to get something for him to sign, and when I finally reached him in the long line of customers, he asked about my family and gave me a quick mini-lecture on keeping my kids and family at the top of my list!
hey Chebby! I NV you man! My wife and I dont have kids, but i do sure get a kick out of it when the local kids stop by on there bicycles and see my bubble top, ask all sorts of questions and get into it. wish i had someone to p*** along this great stuff to. enjoy it for every second! my Dad always said i was little one day then married the next. happy holidays.
