    Hi gang!

I have several friends here in Phoenix that we shall call local hot rodding's "elder statesmen". One of my buddies, Ron Olmstead called me up the other day and casually asked if I could stop by in the next day or two. That usually means I'll be workin' on something for him! No big deal though, he's always there for me, too. When I got there, there was a mini bike with no spark to fettle, and I took care of that asap. After, we sat around in the shop and talked a bit, and he walked out of the room and came back in with a small bag and pressed it into my hands. "I want you to have these, 'cause your about the only person that will keep them all together, protect them, and know anything about who's who".

This bag he slid into my hand contained 14 boxes of 35mm slides or various car shows both indoor and out door starting with the Winternationals Autorama in '63 and ending with L.A. Roadster's show in '69... Needless to say, cool stuff! He has always had good quality cameras and such and shot lots of film.

Even though some of the dates on this stuff are O/T, Ron has always been a traditional kinda guy, and the subject matter is completely on topic, and beautiful.

Here is my question to you guys. How the hell do I turn this into a digital kinda deal so I can post them up here? Does any body in our small, brackish gene pool do this sort of thing? I mean some of the stuff covered is soooo bitchin' (AHRA Winternationals at Beeline '65, Pismo Beach Roadster round up in '67) it just has to be shared. What say you guys?

My father-in-law bought an HP scanner that has an attachment for scanning slides - he did a ton of them and they turned out very well. Last time I was at Costco I noticed they offer the service also, so check locally if you don't want to invest in hardware to do it yourself.

Not the answer you are after but... I took a bunch of one of WW-II negatives to a camera store here in Houston (Wolf Camera) I think they may be national? I had them put them on a disc for me. Kinda expensive but good quality work.

Take them to your local Walmart and tell them to upload them to a CD. You then take that CD and out it in your computer and save the pics onto your computer then u upload them to us. Some walmarts can't do it so u may have to find a local photography place and have them do it

Everybody come to my folk's house! Dad will get out the old slide projector and screen. We need to take baths and get in our pajamas first. Then we'll all sit on the living room floor and have ice cream and watch the slides while dad swears at the stupid projector.

    Oh wait...that was 1963. Nevermind.

I have most of my dad's old slides...I know exactly what you're talking about.

One way to digitize them is to show them on a screen, and take a picture of each slide. It would be a really fun night (or weekly get together)....

Go to the library. Tell them what you have and what you want to do. They've been converting microfiche to digital for a while now; if they can't help you convert the slides, they can point you in the right direction. Heck, they might even have a book that you can check out that outlines the whole process!

Nothing against Wal-Mart, but I would consider that gift irreplaceable...and I hesitate to trust Wal-Mart with something like that.

Hey Chip! This model converts into 14 mega pixels. Not bad for the price. That higher detail will be nice when you want to blow them up. As others have said, many good photoshops will do it for you. I think Walgreens, RiteAid have the technology as well, but, if you have many to do, it may be worth purchasing the machine, and doing it yourself.

Awesome gift man, and Ron sure made the right choice as to who to entrust them to. Tell Ron hi for me, and thanks for all the history he's saved for us. Can't tell him how much we appreciate it.

Oh my God! I just had a serious flashback over that one. Did we live in the same house?

Can't wait to see the pictures. I think taking them to Wallymart or a camera shop to get digitized is the way to go.

  14. In the scanner dept of your electronics store, there is a slide scanner device. Under $100 I think.

  15. Great gift and in great hands........I always look forward to seeing more of your Plymouth, but these slides will do for now.......:) I hope to see both re-emerge.....Centurion9

I just finished scanning 18 boxes of slides from my old mans collection. Its a long labourious process but worth it in the end to save them from deteriating. Unit cost $150 from local electronics chain store

do it yourself with a scanner. the clerk at the store does not care about getting each photo right.

a few years ago I did 1,000 negatives with a negative scanner from 1998. took forever, and gave me tiny crummy photos. on a positive note , I have 1000 photos of Paso Robles somewhere on a CD.

I got a fancy scanner now, got to read the instructions. I tried it and it was hit and miss.

  19. I do recall seeing a place up around 36th St. and Indian School with a sign out front advertising digital conversion. It was somewhere in that area, not too far south of the Bank of America. Seems like any service to help the old folks with all this new fangled digital stuff would be a solid business down there in "God's waiting room".

Cool man! We have a Wolf Camera about two miles from here.

What just absolutely kills me about this is just before my dad passed last year, he tried to give me his slide projector and screen that he had bought back in the fifties. My house is so small, and storage space is shall we say strained as it is, I had to say no... Crap! Would have been a great night. I wonder if Ronnie has a slide projector and screen still....

I hear ya on the Wal-Mart comment. I will treasure these and can't think about any of them being lost or damaged. The library is a great idea and it's only 6 blocks from here!

Thank you sir! And the wait for more Plymouth adventures is not going to be too much more - Been down at Elpolacko's all week patching the tattered pieces of it's soul back together... Evil, little pieces!

I'll hit Best Buy tomorrow and see what I can get such a deal for. Bad timing though, this week has been a bit spendy on hot rod stuff for the Plym...

Matt, thanks for taking a look for me man! Your so damn close, if you want to take a look in person, give me a call and come on over. You'll dig 'em!

Thanks Bodi! Gotta head over to Loper's in the morning to pick up a clutch disc and that's not too far down the road, I'll take a look.

I was in the same boat as you not long ago. Only it was old family pictures on slides. I took a box of them to my local Costco and they gave them back with a disc that had them all scanned onto it. They did a great job. I don't remember how many there were but my wife didn't bat an eye when she paid for them so I know it couldn't have cost much.

Man, just plain bitchin'. Ronnie is tops.

An informal slide show for us local goons would be cool as hell! Hmmm...I wonder what happened to the slide projector that my parents had?

Ronnie picked the right guy, I know you'll give those slides the reverance and protection they deserve.

The comment about taking pics of them with a digital camera as they are being projected reminded me of something we did a few years back. My father-in-law had some OLD family movies without sound from the early fifties along with a projector that still worked. He ran the movies while he and his father (wife's Grandfather who has since passed) narrated what we were seeing while I used a cam-corder on a tripod. The camcorder compensated for the darker parts of the films and the results were incredible - almost seems sharper than the original and much brighter while the accompanying audio passes along irreplacable information.

Most of all build what you want, do what you want, it's your car. My uncle has always said, "If you like it, I love it." Meaning doesn't matter if he likes it or not, because it isn't his car.

Just remember that they are like HP engine parts; clean is just barely enough, super clean is getting there and lab clean is the desired state. If you do it yourself in the casa, have a clean, dust free place, clean gloves, a soft brush and a few cans of air. It's a pain, but do you really want to see that same dust spec on that same picture forever?
That's also the standard you want for any place you may hand this off to. Also, digital tech keeps going just like computers. 10 years ago, 800 Dots Per Inch was big. This place http://www.fotobridge.com which is just one that came up (NO opinion good or bad) offers standard 2000 dpi. They also offer 3000 and 4000 dpi
What may be good now may look pretty bad in a few years. Make any decision with the dpi as part of the process.
