Gotta pull the OD trans out of the 56 to replace the speedo drive gear on the output shaft. Best I can tell there is no other way to change it on the trans with out pulling it out of the car. Just thought I would check with you 52-56 guys see if anyone ever changed one and to make sure the trans has to come out.
I think you could take the tailshaft off without taking the ****** out. Just be sure the OD unit doesn't seperate from the main box and be really careful putting the tail shaft housing back on to prevent from getting that spring messed up on that slider shaft. Of course in the long haul it would probably be easier to just take it out .
