I think getting a rolling Model A ch***is will help prevent this project nickle-and-diming me to death. I PM'd a bunch of hambers and searched the cl***ifieds. If I found a deal I would have had to road-trip to get it, or so I thought. Patrick known on the HAMB as "skajaquada" returned a PM of mine concerning some wheels and told me about an A rolling ch***is. I stopped to look at it and it's CHERRY! It has a lot of I want/need, plus the condition of the stuff is great. I think I got a pretty good deal. The shocks are rebuild, I got a column and wheel that are superb, the axles are complete, torque tube, drive shaft, bones... everything is good! Even the tires are good. Although I would have preferred blackwalls, I'm not going to complain. Really all I need as far as big stuff now is an engine, trans, and radiator, as well as a windshield and a few things that'll need to be bought like inserts and rod ends for splitting the bones. Not a bad way to spend a grand, huh? What do you all think? Edit: I would have taken more pictures... but I forgot my SD card for my camera. I got some more goodies to go along with it too. I'll snap more pics once the ball gets rolling.
As I was running around today, I saw this great little Ford on State Street. I wonder if it's a HAMBer. Looked and sounded really good.
Brent, Wish you all the best on your Gowjob. Kind of trying to build one myself. It is is based on T parts and a front half of a Dodge Touring. 41 Dave
Brent - you got a fantastic deal there, Damn - A model frame out here will sell for 6-700 clams!!!! maybe you'll have it done for my next trip to SLC
I think I faired pretty well on the deal with the frame. I certainly won't complain. Oh... and I'm thinking as long as you're here after February or April it'll be ready to drive around. Although, I'm not sure how two grown men and a shifter and pedals are fitting in this thing.
Thanks, man. I appreciate it. You know what's funny? There's a lot to the HAMB that I missed only being interested in what I'm interested in. Now that I'm building this car and searching tons I've come across some cool people and projects. I wonder what sort of threads have been in my blind spot?
Yeeeah! I looked at the engine, trans, etc., in a 28 Coupe today. It turned over great but the Zenith carb was just pouring out fuel. It came close to igniting but never fired. I don't know much about the intricacies of banger motors but for it was relatively local and fit my budget. I got a good radiator, the trans, complete engine, down-pipe, etc. I do know that there's a lot to learn from here... should be fun! So... really there isn't much left to get but a few little odds and ends but nothing too much that keep me from putting a car together. In only four days I got most of what I needed and for very little. I've come to the realization that I've been over-complicating my past projects! It was dark by the time I got to mess with it... so these are the pics from the ad. I'll pick it up Saturday. Then, it's on like Donkey Kong!
This is neat Brent. Should be fun to watch. You should head up towards Ogden or Honeyville looking for parts. I got's sum kin up there in the farmlands that always keep an eye out for me.
Love this modified jalopy! It would inspire me too if i had that T body. However if you keep the trunk im pretty sure it will be killer too judging by what you like! Love to see what it will become!
You're right, man! I should and try to but I'm still a newbie in this state and don't know too much. Know what's funny? I don't even know where "Honeyville" is... My last job took me all over Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and Nevada... I've seen some tin but nothing that was worth me taking home. I do know it's out there though!
the two center cyclinder on A ford use the same intake port (siamese) if one valve is hung up then it would blow gas back through the carb and keep it from fireing. Also looks like the engine has A model B distributor. looks like A great find to me. enjoy!
Hahaha... too funny. A legend in my own mind, maybe. Next time you're out here you'll have your very own 40 horsepower, leaking ****ty-*** Zenith-carbed cutdown T to drive around! Start saving your pennies for a plane ticket! I need to talk to the banger guys to learn about that carb... Thanks, Bonez! I'm pretty excited the way things have been working out. I'll have less into this car than some of the single pieces (i.e., frame, body, or engine rebuild) of my coupe project!
Yeah, I have a feeling that there will need to be some investigating. See, I look at it (the engine and its parts) and I cannot differentiate anything. The disty could have been from Mars and I wouldn't have known... hahaha. Love that car... mine will be a cheap imitation in comparison! The wheels kill me! Overall, it oozes style.
Brent, Honeyville is about 30 miles North of Ogden. If you ever head up that way take the old highway from Ogden and stop in at Autobody Express. See the Burkdolls, Say hi to B.J. and check out some of their projects. They may have a streamliner body in the works or some other cool project. Then stop in Honeyville and tell my Parents HI for me!
Picked up an engine today! I ***umed, since I know very little about banger motors at the moment, that it was a 1928, like the coupe it was out of. However, I ran the numbers and it looks to be a 1930. I'm not sure if there's any big difference but at least I know a little more about it. I think the trans is earlier than the engine only because of the parking brake handle. Is that so? I'll be pulling some parts off of it since I don't need a heater in the roadster and I'll be searching/asking a bunch of questions in the "Banger" threads. I've learned so much lately by searching, reading, and talking to people about these early cars. This project has brought me in contact with all sorts of people and backgrounds. I enjoy really enjoy that. If anything, I think that the parts-gathering experience has really lit a fire inside of me. Anyhow, here are some terrible pics... if you can enlighten me I'd appreciate it. Next week, TT frame in Idaho and some original body parts to patch it up.
Got the last major piece to the puzzle! Drove to Idaho today and picked up a CHERRY TT frame from this cool old cat with a bunch of cool projects. He had multiple T's and TT's and Stude pickups and he's actually building them! So, now, as I wait for parts to trickle in from around the country I'm getting all my plans together. I've been studying Indy and land speed cars of the 20's and 30's and I think I'll be able to put a bunch of little influences into this car.
Hahaha, no, not yet. I'm going to start a build thread soon. I'll probably post a build thread in early February, that way I'll be to a point where a bunch of work has been done.
Fantastic! Great parts to work with. Would you consider a MoPar flat 6 instead of a banger? (Yes, I am biased.)
So far the body has been patched up but still needs metalfinishing. The frame has the front and center crossmembers and should be set this weekend. Then it's on to setting it up as a roller and fabbing all the brake rods and such so that mechanical brakes can be used. I've got some pics but not enough for a cohesive thread yet. I'll drop some teasers in here when I get home from work... I had never even considered one and truthfully, I know nothing about them. I'll have to check them out to see why you're so biased. I'm really starting to enjoy messing with the banger stuff. I know they're no powerhouses in stock form but they're plentiful, have pretty good aftermarket support, and I'm learning a bunch while sticking to a TIGHT budget on this car. I like hot rods, plain and simple!
Teaser shots... I planned on working on it a TON this weekend but I got a promotion at work and I've got to finish up at my old position. As well, I've volunteered to put together one of those wooden playscapes for my niece. So, needless to say my weekends is being made up of work. The overtime will be good for the hot rod fund and of course that playscape will allow the little ones to burn off some energy. A build thread is coming.
