    Hi folks,
Looking for your advice on where to get a good deal on a variety of grade 8 screws, bolts, nuts and washers etc.
I'm aware of and have used McMaster-Carr and Albany County Fasteners before, both have what I'll need but is there a more economic supplier out there with similar small quan***y ability?
    Thanking you.

I buy grade 8 bolts at my local hardware store, which also sells plumbing and electrical supplies, paint, home repair materials and tools.
Do you have such stores in Sydney?

Farm & Fleet or Fleet-Farm are two local places here, also as mentioned local Ace or True Value hardware stores.
There must be similar outlets in OZ.

  5. I have been buying fasteners from United fasteners here in Adelaide, pretty sure they would have a branch in Sydney.
If you or your work has an account there, their prices are good, and they don't usually do a "minimum order".

I find the OP's question surprising. 31 Coupe, what is it exactly that you can't find in Sydney? Or is it a cost thing? Or the colour?
It has been discussed before, but like everything else, the quality of fasteners is not as trustworthy across the board as it once was.

Depending on the source, grade '8' can mean several things from actual grade 8 to just a bunch of lines on a bolt head.

The shipping cost to Australia might be more that even a large order cost.

In my experience, the MINIMUM to post anything outside of a letter from the US to Australia is just under $25 our money. About $18USD. That would be for something small and light like a set of points or a CD. If that isn't crazy enough, anything bigger or weightier just goes up exponentially. They would have to be pretty special nuts and bolts to justify the expense.

Be VERY...wary on "good deals" on grade 8 fasteners !

There's a very good chance that they may LOOK...like grade 8, but in reality, they are more like grade 5, or even something oddball !

Been there, seen the good AND the bad.

Buying from McMaster Carr, will most likely net you ACTUAL, grade 8 fasteners...but as you know, they will NOT be cheap (proper/actual and cheap do NOT...go together !). But as I say, they are one of the safer bets on buying proper fasteners.

    Buyer beware !!

The current exchange rate is not helping you either. AUD went from about $1.10 in 2012 to about .63 now. I recently bought some items from ya’ll and was pleasantly surprised but the shipping was pretty high.

DO NOT buy grade 8 fasteners at you local hardware store. They buy the cheap stuff to p*** the savings on to the customer. Never buy crucial items based on low price alone.

Doubt you have a Tractor supply store down there. I buy all my bolts from them for normal grade 8 or 5 bolts. They sell them by the pound. Might be able to online from them.

We have Orscheln's here and they sell cheap bolts but also grade 5 and 8, a lot like Tractor Supply but 30 miles closer for me.

What's wrong with United Fasteners in Sydney? I mean, this took me all of about 15 seconds to look up. sales.sydney@unitedfasteners.com.au

    I'd recommend these guys:
    Lee Brothers Engineering
6 Dunlop St, North Parramatta NSW 2151
    Phone: (02) 9890 1555

They have been in business a looooong time, and have got me out of trouble more than a few times. Great stock, good prices, and know what they are selling.

    Cheers,
    Harv

    7/16"

Mcmaster Car is reasonable when you consider that they deliver to your door. I order by 10am have them same day at 4 pm. Worst case 7am the next day. I have an ACE around the corner, and they are stupid high on their prices. Only use them for emergencies

When I was working in Downey, the arrival time was downright disturbingly fast.

Up this way, it's overnight, at no upcharge.

Try your local Caterpillar dealer - you’ll have the Cat logo on the bolt heads, but they’re good stuff and they’ll sell individual pieces.

I’ve never had a grade 8 bolt fail that replaced a grade 5 bolt.
All I use is grade 8. When my bins get low/empty I go to a place that sells by the pound, I buy all grade 8.
I don’t buy into the theory “a grade 8 will snap, where a grade 5 will bend and stay together “. If something causes a grade 8 to snap, it was a hell of an impact that the bolt is probably the least of my concerns;)
Fasteners are spec’ed for what’s needed.

Tractor supply is where I get most of mine, then for the weird stuff or fine thread I buy a box from Fastenall or the local hardware store.

Great advice. Cat bolts are grade 8 case hardened, about as fine a bolt as you will find. Available in many sizes and lengths. Not sure about now, but 15-20 years ago were made by Lake Erie screw (LE).

You are close enough to China that you should avoid "deals" or parts that cannot demonstrate traceability.
