History Grandpas el mirage roadster recreation p.r.c

  1. Hey mark, we kinda got screwed this year with the way the lanes were for the swapmeet. We were in the 5thl lane but around 1 am there was no more la roadster guys there to keep people in check and someone moved all the barracades so they could jump into the first 4 lines so by the time we found a spot it was kinda out of the way. Everyone that cut line got all the good spots. I hope they all got flat tires on the way home to... We didn't get very much foot traffic. It was amazing to see people walk up and look at parts we had for sale and not even give the car a double look. And then to hear what people were talking about when they were looking at it was like a comedy show. There was even a guy in a la roadster hat and shirt telling his buddy's he wouldn't get caught dead in a rusty ass car like that. I'm thinking he was a pocket rodder! We put the car at the end of an isle in the middle so guys didn't really know who's it was. Me and my brother had a great time listening to what people had to say. I would walk up with a beer in my hand and start talking crap about it and guys would agree with me it was so fun. Kevin brought some chalk so we could have even more fun with people. That's when I wrote on the door. Going to china for scrap. One hardcore American did walk up and ask is that your car and I said yea, he said that shits not funny you need to wipe that china crap off that American car. I looked at him and said you know what your right that's like burning a American flag. We both started laughing and I told him see it is funny. All in all we had a great time and met some new friends. I never even went into the show and forgot to go get a brookville parts book. The swapmeet is home for me the guys who really got the car are the guys I want to hang out with. Guys who really know what's up were just in ahhhhh over the car. Even Rudy from Fullerton fab and his son hung out for a couple of hours talking about it and he builds some high end cars. We had some beers and he gave me a few new ideas. He said not to touch it because you can't fake the way it looks. I had lots of people tell me the same thing. We talked about painting the numbers and the hypersonic and prc stuff on it and ageing it to look like it was on there since the late forties. Make it look more like it's his car from back then. Instead of making it look all brand new recreation. So we will see where I go with it. I'm still just going to get it running and driving and worry about the body later. Even grandpa said it like neat the way it is.

Great job thus far--really like what you are doing.
Pocket Rodder--I like that one! Know a few of them.
Had a friend in 60-61 that had an old highboy with tired paint etc. Guys made funny comments about it until they lined up against it. Had a 57 Buick in it with dual 4's-shut down most everything he ever lined up against.

Hey Bruce. I understand your frustration with some people. I really don't care for people that shell out big money for a cookie cutter car and then sit in a personalized lawn chair drinking their favorite beverage wrapped with a personalized foam wrapper. Well you get the picture. There's an ass for every saddle but I still like naugahyde and serape blankets., white walls, lake pipes, spinners, racing disc, fender skirts and primer. And my 27 Roadster.
People have different taste and that's fine but don't knock another's hot rod. Keep it up. Grandpa is going to like it.
    And that's what counts.

  5. Where were you in 52!!! See I get that 27 to me it's a rad ass 50s hotrod. It tells what time period it's from. Whites and full hubcaps bitchinnnnn..... I might even have to say that's the coolest T iv ever seen. I'm a lover of 50s kustoms and that is not only a hotrod but a kustom one at that. That's a nice car zz. Great color white firewall awesome. I hope you bring it up for trog.

  6. Dennis that would of been so cool. I hope you and your wife are already planing your next trip out west. Trog is oct 15-16 hop back in her and come on out the weather is even nicer then.

Bruce, As much as I would like to come back in Oct. to the Trog I will have to pass. Being 76 years old and on a very short budget for hot rod trips $$$$$. I have shot my wad for long trips this year. I will have to settle for the Good Guys Des Moines & Lincoln Ne. shows and the Lead Sled Nats in Salina, Kansas. Plus I always make the Los Punks show in KC in Sept. as it is a great time with lot's of old friends attending.
I will be pulling for you and Gramps to make the Trog run and watching your roadster come alive. I am sure it will be the big hit at the Trog races.......You have a great fan base my friend. I wi9sh we could have spent more time together. I came back over to where you were on Sunday with Kathy, but you had split.

Wish that you'd have pm'd me as I had to wait to grab my stein's at 3:30 Sun.
I was with the black roadster in the pic and the purple 34 over @ the DOS booth. They had the 34 for the weekend.
Sorry that I missed meeting you and Kathy and seeing that hammered 3w in the flesh.;)

There's a whole lot of difference between real hot rodders and people who just own hot rods

Bruce, at the swapmeet last year at LARS, a bunch of early birds roped off many spots near their own spaces and close to the front, claiming these were for their many friends who were running late. As the day wore on, those spots remained vacant, EXCEPT for all the vehicles that were parked there, the ones which had brought all the parts for these guys. Several locals were a bit upset for obvious reasons. These spaces ended up serving as parking spots for the venders, instead of being sold and making money for the swapmeet. I couldn't buy anything large because I was in the roadster, and I really didn't want to haul a frame back to Texas on the softtop. LOL. This year sounded like it was fun, what with the chalk messages, the beer, and the bullshit ! ! ! Oh, HELL YES.

Your brake/clutch assembly is very sanitary and to the point. I also like your idea of the trans mount. Hey, has California run out of u-bolts ?

Kevin.....DAM! as I would have liked to have hooked up with you also. As far as PM message, my tablet was screwed up the whole trip. All it would do is take photos. No emails or PM's in or out going.
We were in the swapmeet until Sunday around 2:00 then we headed out.

I'm the same way. I read four times as much as I comment. But there's plenty of interest here!

  18. I over heard this at a local cruise night,
Guy wearing all route 66 stuff to a guy who built his 56 tbird drag car out of restorers leftovers. "your car looks like crap! why'd ya paint all these different color and primer spots everywhere?"
Car owner "I'm sorry. what did you say sir?"
Guy "WHY IS YOUR CAR ALL DIFFERENT COLORS AND PRIMER SPOTS? IT LOOKS LIKE CRAP!"
Car owner "Sorry man, I'm kind of hard of hearing . What'd you say?"
Guy, yelling now "YOUR CAR LOOKS LIKE SHIT! IT"S ALL FUCKED UP AND DIFFERENT COLORS!!"
Everybody is looking at route 66 guy now.
Car owner, says just loud enough to be heard only a couple spaces over, "Sorry dude, I still cant hear you. It's all muffled, Your heads too far up your ass!"

    That is funny right there!!
I hate when my car is all beaten up to the point where I se rust and spots of primer. But I just paint whole panel, and when i have more primer then paint, I just primer the rest and feel all at piece again.
It's my OCD kicking in scared to death that it will rust away between my very hands.

A little patina goes a long way.
And excessive patina just makes a car look shitty.

But I don't mind if people let there's rust, but I get freaking pissed when people grind off paint and use brake fluid to make it rust faster. It turns in my gut and make my stress level go through the roof. And the best I can do is walk away.
Because RRers and patina lovers don't Want to listen, and I hate to yell.

I know it double standards, but it's mine and I stick too it! Or by it, what ever the term is.

  26. Lots of work being done I should have the front and rear lights buttoned up tonight or tomorrow. I'm cutting up 2 32 light bars to make the same thing grandpa did. Kiwi Kevin gave me some old guide headlights so I want to get them mounted up and get the wires done to add one more check off the list. It's pretty weird to sit back and think that it's all most done. I wrote down everthing I needed to build this car and it was two pages long at the start of this build and now the only things left are some motor parts and the auburn dash and gauges. After the L.A roadster show and with the parts I found there it's almost a wrap. I just looked back and I start this thread march 13 2016. I had a frame and a few small parts. I think I really started getting parts in jan-feb. So not bad for a broke guy on a budget with four kids a wife a dog and three goats huh? And here's the real kicker I'm in it now about 11,000$. The motor by the time it's done will be around 5000. Not going cheap there. Auburn dash if no one can help out and knows theirs is going to a good home will cost me around 4000. So that's a 20000 all original 32 roadster. I don't like that a auburn dash is worth as much as I payed for the body. But hey I watch hoarders show on TV and you can't even get a moldy Popsicle stick from a hoarder. Some people say oh, well you only payed 4 for the body so just think how much you saved there you can afford a 4 thousand dash and that's a crock of shit. Kids my age should not have to beg barrow and steal to keep this history and way of life going for the younger gets kids to see it and want to be apart of this culture. Sorry for all you man cave guys that like to stare at 30 grills hanging around your shop but it's your faults there's not more badass hotrods out there. Get off your asses take the stuff off your walls and flood the swapmeets, so young guys can build the cars you say you will one day and never do. Then you can go down to the local donut shop on Saturday mornings and see what you have helped build. Damn I good. I should run for pres. First bill if pass would be the one that makes hoarding illegal.:eek::D:p They need to make middle finger emojis. Lol oops did I go on another rant damn guys I'm sorry.

    Man I like your style!

Hoarders in my experience are usually assholes who horde stuff just so other people can't have it and they can gloat. They never do much with the stuff they have.

  29. That could work but then again so would an original 32 dash. I think that's what I'm going to find is an all original dash or something else from the late 40s with 40s gauges. I really don't what a new fake dash. I have a brookville dash but it's flat so I'm still looking for a auburn dash and the insert but I'm sure I will figure something out. I might even make a dash out of an old Packard or something from the late 30s and say the hell with the auburn. I'm going to start looking real hard for gauges I know someone here on the hamb with an oil gauge so I'm trying to figure out this paypal thing so I can get it from him. I think my wife has done the paypal thing so I'm gonna have to ask her but then momma knows what I'm spending.... I even thought about just a flat dash with dumbie lights. As long as I can find a temp and oil gauge I will be fine till I find all the rest. I will know I'm out of gas when it shuts off right. Lol I will need and amp gauge to as this car will only ever be 6volt.
