History Grandpas el mirage roadster recreation p.r.c

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by paintslinger805, Mar 13, 2016.

  1. We talked about the harassment from the cops back in the day. He said it was a cat and mouse game. Said he and all the other hotrodders would sneak all around town in their hot cars to hide from the cops. He said he got pulled over for every and any thing. He would get tickets for no fenders, no windshield wiper, headlights too low and no licsens plate light and tail light, Modified-exhaust He said he had a switch to turn the back lights off to get away from the cops. He said there was no way any cop car could keep up with the Pasadena kids. He said whenever he got a ticket for his headlights too low that he would switch his tires from front to back and with the bigger tires up front the headlights would be high enough then get the ticket signed off and switch them back till next time. He was lit up laughing about getting chased and seeing the cops turn off in the chase because they were to slow. Good times for sure. He said they used to meet up at Colorado blvd and fair oaks race it up and scatter. He told me that he owned 3 gravel/concrete trucks and he poured the mud for the Colorado blvd bridge or overpass. Going to buy a go pro video recorder so I can set it up and talk about all this cool history. He already has his calendar set for the grand national roadster show.

  8. Well I was so hoping you would make it for granddads sake, but it sounds like you guys had a blast anyway. So happy for Bobby & H&H as those are 2 killer guys and hot rods. But I total understand...if it is not ready don't do it. I have screwed up a lot of things in the past by running it before it was ready. We will all be here when the time comes for you and Elmer to take that first ride in Hypersonic......
Really like all the cool stash ya brought home from his place and I bet there is a lot more.
I like his idea of driving the roadster down Rt. 66. Sure wish I lived closer as I would be up for that cruise with you guys.....Take care...

  9. Well Dennis it gos all the way to Chicago so we can all meet up some where in your neck of the woods. Maybe Hubba Hubba and Wyatt will be ready for a cruze too. Get that good ol boy from San Antonio Texas Gary A. And Kevin and doc in Clem's car. We just cruise and see what it's like to drive 30s cars for 3000 miles.

Like the Waltham clock. My grandfather's family lived in Waltham and most of them worked for the company.
I love it when you can get your dad to start reliving the past and telling stories!

Yeah Bruce, where does your dad stand on all this stuff you and Gramps share? Did it skip a generation? Or am I touching on something too personal or emotional? If so I'm sorry, I've held this question off for a long time.

  13. Wyatt my dad grew up in the sixes so he was a drag-street racer. After my grandpa came back from Korea he meet my grandma and started a family. He didn't go out to the lakes anymore. He did take the kids to the drags at pomona and irwindale Santa Ana and so forth. My dad's brother had a badass 55 chevy with a 4 speed and a 409 and my dad loved impalas. They would cruze wittier blvd in east L.A. Back in those days. Hook up with someone that wanted to race and it was on. My dad was a 327 lover and he built a full nascar style all lunati motor and put it in a 63 chevy fleet side custom cab big back window pickup with an m22 trans. It was and still is the scariest car/truck I have ever been in. I remember crying in it as a little kid because of how loud and fast it was. My dad could bang corners in that truck like a movie scene. He had it till I was about 11 and it got stolen. Or id still have it today. So just differnt time period. He loves that I'm recreating hypersonic and wants to drive it of course.

Don't hesitate on recording your grandpa's stories. It's one thing I kick myself in the ass for with my g'pa. Wish I would have at least written down the stories he had. Hell, most of my family history went with him. I bought a mini tape recorder to do the same with my father in law and I need to get on it. He's a really cool dude with a million stories from his high school hot rod days and his time in the Army.

Don't wait. We all hope they'll be here forever but sadly they won't.

  15. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Trog west weekend. Grandpa looking under a 3w 32 to see what rearend and how the tail pipes were ran. Says it kinda looked like his back in 47. The brownish 5w had an auburn dash and he says that's how my dash was just like that. Then there's 383 duece Dennis and also Gary from Texas working with grandpa on hypersonic.

  18. Those are great pics! Two seniors, enjoying what was a big part of their lives, is a great lesson for the rest of us.
Get those videos of your Grandpa ASAP! You can't presume his, or your, longevity.

  20. Your welcome greaser. He says he has pictures of his parents touring car that they drive from P.A. To California. In 1924. He says they camped along the road every night and his dad had to fix 7 flat tires. Pull the tubes out and repair them then pump them back up. Next time I go down we are going to go through all his old photos. He thinks his sister has his moms diary of the trip. I'm gonna try and she if she may have it.

Man, Bruce, I was in Impound as well congratulating Bobby and Max on their Record!! We must have been right next to each other. I was the foreign sounding guy with the SCTA white shirt on!
As for the fellow taking the nap--that is my pal Mikey Spacek. He worked his butt off setting everything up on Friday, all the trailers, course stuff and doing Inspections as well. Just one of the many volunteers that make it happen....

  30. Wyatt we were just talking about the color at el mirage. Jim miller the scta historian asked him what color it was. Grandpa says it was dark grey primer. Lacquer primer as we all know can be over thinned for a shiny look. It was cheap. Get it scratched up and shoot more primer over it. I got a few gallons of old r-m battleship dark grey. It might already be all primered up ........
