History Grandpas el mirage roadster recreation p.r.c

I just re read this hole thread and I never mentioned that he got arrested for drag racing in Pasadena. Had to spent the night in jail because his parents wouldn't come pick him up. Tough love huh. I can still remember they had a picture of his mug shot at his retirement blown up on the wall. He was in black and white stripes. I was 8 years old and still remember the picture. I asked my aunt who lives with him if she will find it. So I can post it. He went from outrunning the law to becoming the law.

O.K. My apology. I happen to think this may well be the best thread to come down the pike. However, there are many local build threads by the likes of Brian Bass, Vern Tardel's young son Keith, the young gun Eric Anderson, plus those that come out of Europe. I am a late comer to serious rodding and am very envious of the experiences that some have had since their teens. You guys (yes, you are certainly included) take all car enthuiasts back to a time when 4 bangers, then flatheads, ruled. This stuff allows us to almost ride with the drivers, almost smell the fuel and rubber, and view the scenes through your photos. So, again I apologize if I came off as anything other than a real fan. My wife and I will be cruising to El Mirage in May in our Deuce Highboy and hope to meet tons of old timers and young guns alike. Third time to CA for the roadster. I'm almost 70, so give me a break. Now, I am back to reading and enjoying these posts.

Here's a cool picture of the back of my grandpas car. I always wondered if it could be it because my grandpa always drew all over his car. I didn't know for sure until jimmy b sent me the picture he had of the rear of the car. It's the car in the back right. I asked him this last weekend if he remembered what it said on trunk lid and he can't remember. Maybe something hypersonic special. Check out the ground. Looks cool my grandpa was telling Kevin on sat. About how he ran his pipes out the back of his car and how they were under the frame horns. You can see them good in this picture.

This is Epic! Love the story and you taking up the torch. I'm pretty close by so if you end up needing stuff let me know, might be able to help track it down.

Thanks terpu, I really could use some help finding parts. The parts I need the the most that I can't find are an Edelbrock dual high rise intake, a 32 roadster seat I would like to find an original one that shows its age if I can. Auburn dash and gauges or even just gauges and I can use a repop SoCal auburn insert. A good gas tank, mine has about 20 pinholes on bottom. I need 2 more hood hold downs. A radiator. And an old chromed front spreader bar. That's all I can really think of at this point. I just got the ok from the warden to order the body from brookville next month if I can't buy the og one that I have said I have a line on. If anything the body will be here fathers day weekend pomona. So I would love to be able to bring the chassis running and driving down to Lars and slap the body on and put the seat in as I'm going to have my grandpa there as along as he I feeling good he will be there. I think it would be awesome to see his face while I'm putting the body on. And I'm sure their will be alittle crowd of y'all who really get it. Thanks everyone for liking this thread.

No offense to Brookville but I hope you get an OG body as much as I'll get my car finished. It's so much more emotionally moving with Henry steel and old parts.

 

Ya I hope I do get the one I'm after but if not it's not going to stop this build. I also need to find a Spaulding ignition to make it even more like his car. I would like to find a Spaulding Lincoln v12 conversion as he thinks that's what he had if he remembers right. I know their out there I went to a place in L.A that had about 10 of them but not for sale as always. Hopefully one day huh. I'm just going to build it with what I can find now and I will change out parts as I find them down the road. Just like he did.

Grandpa in S.C.T.A. News:
I have been following your thread on Grandpa. I have some old S.C.T.A. News and have found the following: July 17-18, 1948, August 28-29, 1948, September 25-26, 1948, June 11-12, 1949 and July 16-17, 1949 - Car #370 in 1948 and Car #390 in 1949. Different Engines listed: Ford V-8 - 1936 - 242 Cubic Inch, Ford V-8 - 1941 - 238 Cubic Inch, Mercury V-8 - 1946 - 248 Cubic Inch. Hope this helps, great story and good luck.

That's awesome man thank you. Please look at these pictures. Can you please take pictures of them and post them so I can make a digital copy. I never seen the one that says he had a 1936 motor. These are the only ones I have copy's of so far. Grandpa say he went every time so I know there's more out there. Thank you. I hope someone reading this finds more pictures of his car as well. I would never get this car done paying over the rainbow prices like that. Iv seen them half that. I'm just always looking for other parts at the times I see them and always on a budget. I will find one cheaper than that. Thanks for the heads up.

Here's the pedal box i narrowed for the side shift 40 trans to fit. Tonight I will cut the new shaft and bushings on the lathe. Once everthing is nice and tight I will weld the box back together, then I will heat up the arms and bend them back to where they belong.Then the box and pedals will be done.one more check off the ol list.

 

Don't worry about bending the pedals until you have the engine and steering column in place, as you'll more-than-likely need to compensate for them. The later engine doesn't seem to fit in exactly the same place as a '32 V8 would. I actually had to bend my stock pedals, as well as grind some flash off the back corner of the engine block, and I didn't do any of this narrowing stuff you did..

 

I was going to use the little cut out on bottom of firewall as reference where the brake pedal gos. I don't have a 32 steering box I have a 34 so it won't just bolt up. So I dont really know the angle that the colume needs to be at. I was just gonna mock up the 34 colume with the 40 tube on it and see where the pedals need to be I also thought maybe I should wait till I get a body to bend them so I know how much room there is. I could really use a 32 box if anyone has one for sale please p.m. Me. I would like to put the 34 gears in the 32 box as iv heard that's the thing to do. If I can find out the right angle I would just redrill the frAme for the 34 bolt pattern and be done with it. Whatcha all think about that?

 

I used a '50 F-1 box with a '32 flange welded to it, but it was in the stock location left-to-right.

 

The 33-34 sector housing is shorter than a 32 so if you redrill the frame the column tube will not pass through the notch in the firewall as its supposed to. You need a 32 sector housing. We have a couple. We can also machine it to take a press-in seal instead of the worthless cork ring that leaks no matter what you do. When you talk to my dad ask him about the steering. The early gears are one of our specialties.
