Its hard to see in theses cell photos - the beltline and body seams are a dark brown, almost black. Should be a good contrast with the brown leather interior. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
A couple more - last remaining part to paint is the bed. The wheels are going to be powdercoated black - these are just rollers. Saw this unusual hood on a restored '30 roadster that next to mine. He said it was a factory accessory hood and original. - Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
A little color - Mounted the rear fenders tonight - almost done with this phase. Had to work out some fitting issues with the bed and alignment with the aprons/board - but with some tweaking it came together. I am running some additional hardware through side of the bed aprons and fender wells (behind the tires - vertically through the frame rail kick-ups) so that the bed will be firmly secured. Due to the kick-up the rear bed mounting boards are not in place and the bed is only secured at the front. It's hard to capture the color in the garage under florescent lights. I am going to buff/polish when it's back in my garage for the final paint finish. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Headlights are King Bees. I also have a set of original commercial headlights that are restored - but I prefer these. This is the look I am going for: My friend Cal's truck - from 1959 (just a bit lower in the rear)
Paint is done - will be back in the garage this weekend. I was a bit stumped on the rear brakes. I wanted the 5x5.5 bolt pattern for the '40 wheels and to match the front (56 truck brakes). I have a '57 9" small bearing rear axle, but it has the smaller lug pattern. Axles were a non issue (went with Moser) - but brakes were an issue. I found a set of early Bronco small bearing brakes and now I'm good to go. I need brake lines, wiring, gas tank, bed wood and some sort of seat to finish. Almost there - pretty excited to get this thing on the road. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
My brother had a nice '29 RP he bought from my pal Sneaky, who got it out from under a 4 foot saw blade it was powering. Anyway, full fendered and SBC powered, it had '34 commercial headlights on it. I had it at the shop one week, and when li'l bro returned, it had a pair of Dietz headlamps. We all agreed the Dietz were the ones, so they stayed on there.
I did a mock up without fenders. Was considering running it that way for a couple years to save time and money. In my eye the RPU (or any model A) only looks good without fenders if it sits on a 32 frame. The fenders are a lot more work - but I'm glad I took that route. Thanks for the compliments - This is my first model A and I'm mostly pleased with how it is coming together. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
there's a few things i can't get enough of on an A: shiny paint, fenders and an A grill shell. yours has 'em all. that's a damn pretty pickup! i'm with ya on the fenderless A thing; i think it only looks good on a '32 frame. fenders look so damn nice, it seems worth the effort.
I saw the same hood sides on stock 30 Ford phaeton here in Hawaii. (everyone thought they're Chevy hood sides) Your Truck looks Awesome!!.. T
Your truck is looking good! There are several roadster pickups in the area around where I live that serve as inspiration, not that a RPU needs much inspiration. Here're some up-dated pictures of mine.
Now that is one of those, that a guy "would not have to change a thing on" - I like the style of the guy that did that build - NICE!
Closing this one out - I made a project trade a year or so ago with roundvalley here on the HAMB. He sent me the finished photos earlier this week, it's a GREAT looking truck. He changed a few items to his taste - all good changes and I have to say I'm a little jealous - but it's a good feeling to see it finished right:
